What on earth's going on with my weight?

Give or take half a stone and a couple of pregancies I've been the same weight all my adult life.

I'm now 54, still having periods but becoming less regular. No other real symptoms.

I eat pretty well, regular meals, not too much junk, very little sugar.

I exercise a lot, currently marathon training, plus some cycling and regular yoga and pilates.

In the last 4 weeks I have put on a stone, making me as heavy as I was 4 weeks after giving birth!

But my clothes still fit! Even the ones that have always been a bit snug. I can maybe "feel" it a bit on my thighs, but I don't really know where this stone is.

I'm 5'7" so it's not as much on me as it might be on a shorter person, but surely a stone shows somewhere.? Also, how in such a short time?!

For a guess, menopause.
I've got bigger, jesus my stomach is massive now. And theres no shifting it.
Pulling on the usual jeans I wear is like wrestling. Am also 5'7". Well 5'6" now, I've shrunk.
I dont know my weight, I dont own scales and dont want to.

Happyboom · 04/04/2024 06:37

I'm sure it is menopause, but 4 weeks?! And I don't seem to be any bigger, my jeans still fit

Muscle and water due to all the training? Have you increased your protein intake?
Its reassuring that your clothes still fit, although half a stone shouldnt make that much difference at your height. Where do you store your weight? (Legs, hips, bust, back?)

Could you be pregnant?

Sorry to scare you but it’s been known to happen!

Edited

It's a stone, not half a stone.

My weight is on my thighs. I'm doing more long runs, but my overall exercise hasn't really increased that much and I haven't changed my diet. I was losing a bit until 4 weeks ago.

@Winnading but OP is saying she hasn't got bigger? As in her clothes still fit and she can't feel the weight anywhere, except maybe a bit on thighs

I agree muscle and water.
@StoneTheCrone OP said it's a stone she's gained, not half a stone

Not unless there's been divine I intervention. 🤣

Yes menopause there's a book by Stacey Sims you might want to read - Next Level

When this happened to me the gp just laughed at me.

You'll need to train & eat differently eat a lot of protein & lift heavy

lljkk · 04/04/2024 06:53

since your clothes still fit, you didn't get bigger.

Faulty scales would be my guess.

StoneTheCrone · 04/04/2024 06:54

Ah, sorry, yes, i see its a stone. Well, it looks like the dreaded menopause then. The same thing happened to me when i hit 45 but mine was a stone in six weeks, then 30 pounds by 3 months. I went on Atkins.

No, it's not that, I've tried a couple of different ones.

And I'm saying only my stomach got large. Its menopause, it hits each of us differently. And my stomach increased in size in 12 weeks. One day it was ok, flattish, now its barrage balloon sized. I've not got bigger anywhere else.

Why if nothing has changed about me, no diets, no different exercise etc would my stomach expand?

I will add I'm 54, and a year past full menopause symptoms, and my stomach increased between Sept and dec last year.

Are you on HRT? I know we’re told that it doesn’t cause weight gain (and they blame the menopause) but my weight explosion 100% happened once I went on HRT.

Oh dear, no I'm not, but currently talking to GP about it.
