ANOTHER tax bill - but why?!

I submitted self assessment in January, dutifully paid my £3k tax bill, and have started saving for the £1.5k I also have to pay in July in giddy anticipation for next year.

But now I’ve been told I also owe £163 right now! Indeed apparently I’m paying interest on it. But why? I’ve paid my tax bill in full (statement confirms this), so what is £163 about?

You should be able to login to your Government Gateway account and see what the £163 relates to.

Could it be National insurance?

Thanks all. It doesn’t seem to say what it’s for. I’m now trapped in with my toddler and can’t get it to display at all on phone, but will screenshot when I can get back downstairs. So upset! I actually gave £160 to charity this afternoon, so the tax bill of this amount feels like some sort of cosmic joke.

Class 2 NIC was £163.80 for 22/23 so I imagine it is that. IIRC your tax return does show the total tax you owe then total tax+nic below that so guessing you have just picked up the wrong number.

Thanks for this! That makes a lot of sense, so feel a bit better knowing what it is. (Even if tax bill seems unending!)
