Threadworms. Poor child is so distressed

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:35

Trying to get my 3yo asleep, sorry typing with left hand only.

Gave ovex last night, she is so distressed tonight and can’t lay still. Crying and trying to itch. I feel so sorry for her: (

when will ovex work?

How did you find out that she had threadworm please? Do you know where she may have gotten it from?

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:49

Well obviously i can see them.. you don’t need more details than that!
Nursery I expect

Get the torch on your phone on and have a really good close look further forwards. Threadworms can go on safari and make poor wee girls wild with distress. If either of ours are going bonkers at night that's the first thing we check now. If you find them, a cotton bud is the best thing to lift them with, I hate doing it as trying so hard not to hurt the poor victim but the relief is instantaneous.

If you can see them then remove them. That's the only way to put an immediate stop to the itching. You can use a cotton bud to aid in the removal.

Deebeedore · 03/04/2024 19:51

Ahh I feel your pain! We've been through this twice, I read that a thick layer of Vaseline round their anus helps so tried it with DS and it did work (put a glove on first then straight into your wheelie bin!)
Keep nails short and wash all bedding and cuddly toys she may have!
Hope she gets some relief soon, they're horrible things!

Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop · 03/04/2024 19:52

Put vaseline around her anus so they can’t wiggle their way out. The medication starves them to death so it takes a few days to work.

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:52

I have cleaned and removed about 4 times in the last hour. She keeps feeling she needs the toilet. So I use that opportunity.

it’s bloody awful poor thing

I found with DD that putting on a nice thick layer of nappy cream helped stop them . . . migrating, and therefore reduced the itching.

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:53

@Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop thanks. I have done that - been searching back on Mumsnet posts. Thanks

So is it the actual worms that cause the insane itching? Or eggs

OP posts:
Deebeedore · 03/04/2024 19:54

It's the worms coming out that cause the itch Envy

honeyandfizz · 03/04/2024 19:55

I put a load of sudocrem on mine to stop them coming out when they had them. Awful, I feel your pain!

olderbutwiser · 03/04/2024 19:55

And burrowing up into places they shouldn't go... Horrible, she has my sympathy.

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:56

I wish I could stop it for her. Obviously I really don’t want to catch it either! My other children are much older so I’ve not done this for years.

its really hard seeing her so uncomfortable when she just wants to go to sleep

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 19:57

Thank you all for the replies. DH is out of the house so I haven’t got him to talk to about it. I just wish I could blast those bloody things away!

Sometimes they can go into the vagina. That causes itching too.
Have you treated the whole family? We did a dose for all of us when my daughter had it.

Yearsyonder · 03/04/2024 20:06

I found a dose of Piriton helped with the itching.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 03/04/2024 20:09

Just keep cleaning and removing. As the ovex starts to work they start to vacate so irritation can get worse before it gets better. Agree with checking the vulva and vagina as thoroughly as possible. They get into all the folds and creases 😭🤦‍♀️

I’m sure you will have already down it but treat everyone in the house now and treat everyone again 2 week later.

Also tell nursery so they can inform other parents to be on the look out so she doesn’t get infected.

JennyfromtheBlok · 03/04/2024 20:18

Thanks-

@Justyouwaitandseeagain she sat in the bath playing for ages earlier! She was happy there. Then I showered down after.

@Hoplittlebunnyhophophopandstop yes we’ve all had a tablet. And definitely planning on taking again. I have told nursery. It’s an outdoors one and so they all wear puddle suits so no access to bums! 🤞🏼 It hasn’t spread. She’s not actually been for a while as we’ve been away camping…. 😐🤔🙄

I speak from experience.....

Ovex
Pirition
Dollop of sudocreme or vaseline on her bum before bed

I found ovex makes the worms more active until they die.
Also, dose after 2 weeks for any eggs swallowed after 1st dose

Most kids get them, dont stress about clearing every part of the house. Bedding and the bathroom.

JPGR · 03/04/2024 21:31

Definitely sudocrem helps.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/04/2024 21:55

If she likes pineapple get her to eat loads of it, it's a natural dewormer and sorted my dd out after getting worms repeatedly.

JennyfromtheBlok · 04/04/2024 13:02

There are still live ones in the poo today..
she definitely ate the tablet and washed it down wi the milk (as it had kind of gone chalky in her mouth) this was Tuesday night.

Second piriton - it shouldn’t work because it’s not a histamine itch but it definitely helps along with the cream. I tea miserable and I wish they would develop a suppository that would paralyse the little bastards.
