Posh hotel un-asked for alarm at 6 - compensation?!

Staying in a v posh hotel. Think 900 Swiss francs per night...

Just got woken up by a bloody alarm. Picked up phone and got a recorded message saying we had asked for a 6am alarm. We hadn't!! It woke us both and now we can't get back to sleep.

Rang reception, who were puzzled about the alarm but not v apologetic.

AIBU to think they could offer a small gesture to apologise?? Eg a free bottle of wine?! Or AIB greedy and mistakes happen?!

Op - any hotel that values its reputation for good service would do something something to compensate. Some people on this thread have very low expectations indeed.

I stayed in a (UK) hotel last month and the fire alarm went off at 6am. A more modestly priced establiahment than your hotel - but when I checked out, I was given a £50 refund. Planning to return.

Garlicnaan · 04/04/2024 21:28

I'd have been really fucked off by that. If I'm woken any time after 5ish I find it almost impossible to go back to sleep, I can't nap either. It would have probably affected me all day, and if I'm forking out that much I'd expect service / staff that was good enough not to make such a basic error.

Menopausalandgrumpy · 04/04/2024 21:36

I don’t understand the responses here at all. High end establishments pride themselves on excellence and being woken up at 6am is quite a significant mistake. It’s not a travel lodge! I imagine it’s quite an exclusive place where it would be more tricky to mix up rooms etc.
you are not greedy, they barely apologised.
I got a free bottle of Prosecco and a slab of chocolate when my coffee machine and something else (can’t remember now) didn’t work. I didn’t ask for it but it was a lovely gesture.

I’m amazed that someone immediately thinks ‘kerching! Compensation’ when anything slightly inconvenient happens. It wouldn’t even occur to me. I just put such little things down to life’s rich tapestry 😮 I might even take advantage of being awake at 6am by going outside and breathing in the quiet early morning. You’re on holiday. You can have a nap later 🤷‍♀️

I know! I'm on MN on holiday!

I don't know about everyone else, but I need some down-time on holiday too. We walked for miles yesterday, spent hours exploring, then we had some time to in our room. I don't see why that's so bizarre.

Anyway, we had our 'free drinks' last night. We were limited to Swiss beer and one Swiss wine or soft drinks!!! Not entirely what we'd been expecting, and it didn't really make us feel like valued guests either. So, TripAdvisor it is when we get home...

Jesus Christ. A free drink each isn’t good enough for you?

I bet the staff can’t wait for you to leave. And will be pissing themselves when you write your review.

Isinglass20 · 04/04/2024 21:54

£900 per night in Switzerland is not high end for a hotel

sunglassesonthetable · 04/04/2024 21:57

But if you can't cope with minor things going wrong, you're not well equipped for life.

Oh please. Don't be so dramatic. OP was pissed her expensive beauty sleep was ruined. That's it. Doesn't mean you're " not equipped for life ". It was a luxury hotel not a test of character.

You PAY a hotel for a SERVICE. Did they fulfil it?

It's not a character flaw to find them lacking. You win no prizes for not mentioning it.

Wow. Considering it was an apology I would have expected it to be any free drinks. Actually I'd have expected maybe appitizers as well. If it's any type of corporate you can co tact by email I'd do that too. I mean the drinks they offered are the same that come free in a lot of hotels anyway. I travel a lot for work.

And now the hotel isn't high end. 😁 You couldn't make this shit up.

Nah they won't even care.

LittleGlowingOblong · 04/04/2024 22:05

All that’s missing now is for you to name the hotel in a final coup de grâce and a highly engaged audience!

Brunts12 · 04/04/2024 22:07

OP, did you expect a free night/stay for the unbearable inconvenience?

AnnieSnap · 04/04/2024 22:07

Something else that makes my travelling/holidays fairly stress free is that when things go wrong, and they do from time to time (Botswana, I’m especially looking at you), I don’t spend any time dwelling on it whilst I’m still away. I don’t post anywhere about it, or talk about it more than necessary. This is because I want to move on and enjoy my time. Grumbling in my head, or elsewhere isn’t conducive to that, so I don’t do it. I have had to complain a few times after a trip - for significant, costly things. Not things like an unwanted alarm call, cold tea or some other trivial thing!

Xyz1234567 · 04/04/2024 22:07

If you can afford to pay that much for a hotel, think how incredibly lucky you are.

Compare it to what the hotel night porter probably gets and wind your neck in love.

What a sad state of affairs when you have so very, very much and just want to get some poor member of staff in trouble. You can't be that tired if you've time to complain on here.

Smeegall · 04/04/2024 22:08

Nagado · 03/04/2024 05:39

I think this is a perfect example of what people mean when they talk about ‘compensation culture’ having gotten out of control. It was a mistake. They happen in expensive hotels too. You haven’t been financially impacted. You seriously want to be compensated for a couple of hours sleep? Aren’t you embarrassed that thought even crossed your mind?

And perhaps if you’d just hung up and rolled over instead of sitting up and phoning down to reception to complain, you’d have found it a lot easier to get back to sleep.

The OP has paid 900 to be able to sleep somewhere and has been woken up at 6:00…

Erm I think the OP is the dramatic one here

Smeegall · 04/04/2024 22:08

I’m with you OP. Personally id be complaining if I’d paid that much to sleep and then I was woken up…

hellsBells246 · 03/04/2024 05:37

Oh wow. I wasn't expecting such vitriolic replies! Right, thanks. Clearly I was being too optimistic ... and greedy.

Cheers 👍🏼

A good thing you do not live in a war zone. Imagine being woken up by a bomb!? God knows how much compensation you would have asked for then!!

"I would like for the entire hotel to be signed over into my name - What's left of it, that is."

🙄

Vitriolic indeed.

ChampagneLassie · 04/04/2024 22:11

I think you’re not being unreasonable at all. I’m planning my first night away from my 2 yr old who wakes through the night. This will be my first undistrubed night in 2 years. If I get woken by an alarm I would want compensation!

cremebrulait · 04/04/2024 22:13

Drama.
Drama.
Drama.

sunglassesonthetable · 04/04/2024 22:14

Pay through the nose for a luxe hotel but don't hold them to a high standard of service because, you know, other people live in a war zone. Yep. @MustWeDoThis

sunglassesonthetable · 04/04/2024 22:16

Well if expecting to get what you pay for, is being 'dramatic '.

I'm fascinated by this thread. I honestly feel like half of MN are competing to see who can have the most deranged take on this as some kind of practical joke. Is this what's happening? Please somebody tell me.

😂😂😂😂😂 The responses on here get increasingly batshit.

So even though I'm staying in one of the world's most expensive cities, I'm not allowed to complain when something goes wrong in case the night porter isn't being paid enough?? Really?!
