Google Map Worse Navigation

WaterLilly28 · 02/04/2024 05:52

Okay, so whenever I use google map for directions, at some point it has to frustrates me. It often takes you through longer routes, your destination literally could be right beside you yet it'll take you all the way round. Though worse is when it takes you to dead ends, and if you try to divert your car, it still brings you back to the same end. Sometimes it tells you when to turn left or right in last minute as well, which makes you miss the turn.
Does this happen to anyone else who use the google map gps? or I am missing something? The app is updated.

It always works for me? I normally put in the actual place name rather than the postcode.

Gatekeeper · 02/04/2024 06:33

Yes me...bloody irritates the life out of me with re-routes, short cuts and changes the original route. I can't remember it doing that in the past.

Lots of complaints about the same thing out there with no way to override. Only way to kind of 'set' it is pin other places on your chosen route along the way

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 02/04/2024 06:37

I've never found that and I use it a lot. It often uses different routes than I might have chosen but that's generally either to avoid traffic or because I have set it to use the more eco friendly route where it doesn't make a significant difference to the arrival time (I've told it I have a hybrid so it takes that into account). I've never been taken to a dead end etc.

MollyButton · 02/04/2024 06:52

Normally works for me. Once took me to a park and ride and walk (10 mins) from there to my destination rather than the car park Nextdoor. But that was corrected after I reported it.
Apple Maps sometimes takes me to the busy rd close to the property but over their garden fence with no way of access. But I work around that too.

My son has driven 40 thousand miles in the last year and never uses it. He uses Waze which seems much better. Even told me about a pothole coming up on the road on a journey on Sunday!

cakeorwine · 02/04/2024 07:31

What you need is a teenager!

DS was great last year in France. Found me a perfectly good country route through rural France when we came off the autoroute. Just a bit sarcastic with direction!

TesticularHeft · 02/04/2024 07:36

Check your route settings - we once drove quite far and was shocked how long it took until I realised I'd told it to avoid motorways but also check if you have least miles/quickest way selected.

It could also be telling you that way to avoid traffic that you don't know about.

TesticularHeft · 02/04/2024 07:39

I don't know about dead ends but if you divert, it will try to bring you back to the original route as it thinks you took a wrong turn. It should try and relocate once the other way is the quickest way.

I just use my car sat nav but previously found google maps great and far superior to Apple Maps. My car sat nav is a bit shit - where the m1 splits left to the m6 it tells me to keep right and turn left onto m1. I'm on the m1 and should be leaving it. Why not just say merge onto m6.

RobinBobbin · 02/04/2024 07:57

I use Waze. It's not perfect, and has a habit of trying to save a couple of minutes by sending you on an obscure route. But usually good especially with live tragic incidents.

RobinBobbin · 02/04/2024 07:57

*traffic not tragic obvs

EverySporkIsSacred · 02/04/2024 08:02

I use Goggle Maps as a pedestrian (I get lost very easily) and lately I thought I'd been getting worse for just these reasons!

Talipesmum · 02/04/2024 08:04

I use it all the time and haven’t found this at all. Agree to check settings - the eco setting can send you a long way round sometimes.

Instantcustard · 02/04/2024 08:04

Don't ever use it in Venice. It had me walking round in circles for half an hour before I realised 😅

Pashazade · 02/04/2024 08:23

Just use Waze, it uses Google maps for the actual mapping, so the basics are solid but has more flex for routes and changes on the fly very well when needed.

ShiftySquirrel · 02/04/2024 08:25

I use it but usually for longer routes I'm familiar with, just for traffic updates and ETA. We used the eco route too and have a diesel.

It was a bit crap with an unexpected road closure, but then so were the yellow diversion signs!

Elderflower14 · 02/04/2024 08:30

Ds2 who has autism and is deaf and I were trying to find our way into Liverpool Street Station a couple of years ago. He decided to GM us... He got us there..... Via the back entrance and all the delivery bays and large noisy reversing lorries!!

Elderflower14 · 02/04/2024 08:31

Should add we were on foot and not in a car!! 🤣 🤣

I used Google Maps in Venice with no problems. Found everywhere I needed it to with no effort. I have no natural sense of direction so am completely dependent on map apps.

BippityBopper · 02/04/2024 08:44

I was talking to DH about this the other day. The constant suggestion of other routes is very distracting.

It also sends me on longer routes. I was about 200m from my house so knew the area well, and Google maps was basically telling me to go in one big circle. I ignored and it cut 6mins off my ETA 🙄

Lots of people have suggested Waze to me, so I think I will give it a try.

blobby10 · 02/04/2024 08:50

Anything is better than a blooming VW/Audi satnav!! My Audi one takes me some of the oddest routes and whilst driving in Devon, my old Golf sat nav took us down a narrow country road (grass down the middle and hedges touching each side) think it saved 0.005miles Grin

MollyButton · 02/04/2024 19:41

Apple Maps have improved and are great for public transport and walking. Waze will have you leaving and rejoining at Motorway exits to shave a bit of time off. Also the one time I was really relying on it it lost signal just when I needed it. It is also dependent on other people telling what is happening.
But I do like Waze's feature which predicts the best time to leave.

WaterLilly28 · 04/04/2024 01:15

Ahh looks like many of you are ok with it. I reckon I do have to check setting then. As for waze I'll give that a try too. Much appreciate your replies... 🙂🙂

I use it everywhere without issue. Including Venice

Hardlyworking · 05/04/2024 09:00

Waze all the way! Real time user-base sourced delays, speeds and obstructions/danger such as broken down cars and police vans parked on the verge. Saved my arse a few times now.
