Alton Towers and rain - when do they close rides?

I have bought my daughter and granddaughter platinum tickets for Alton Towers for Thursday this week. The weather forecast is now for "light rain".

At what point do they tend to shut rides due to rain/weather conditions? Would light rain be enough, or does it tend to be more when it's lashing down and high winds?

The tickets have cost an absolute fortune, so it'll be gut-wrenching if they don't get to go on the big rides.

Last time we were there in July last year it was an afternoon of heavy showers,

Most were still running, the GC were in the que for thirteen and the heavens proper opened and the ride shut for about 5 mins whilst the worst passed then operations carried on.

I don't think light showers will bother but will make queuing uncomfortable.

Thank you. That's reassuring

I'm really not sure about rain. But they do close a lot when it's windy.

I would say in high winds and thunderstorms. Lightning will shut them I’d think.

I know the answer to this Smile

Thirteen is the one that can't operate in the rain. The others are usually OK. The advantage of going when it's raining is that the park tends to be quieter.

I went last week and it was FABULOUS although drizzly. I dressed appropriately and we got on 14 rides.

There is a point at which you get a guaranteed return if a certain percentage of rides are shut.

I hope everyone has a wonderful time!

I love going in the rain. Ponchos on and small queues! That’s a great present you got them Smile

DD and I went when it rained all day.

No queues. Everything a walk on. Platinum passes would have been a complete waste of money!

13 and Galáctica were down a lot of the day though.

Thank you all. Sounds as though the day won't be too badly interrupted as long as it's not too windy.

Kind of wishing I'd saved my money and not bothered with the platinum passes though 😂

I upgraded them as it seems such a waste of money to spend all your time queuing for three or four rides, so although ruinously expensive, it seemed better value for money as you can go on all the big rides as many times as you want with the platinum pass.

Ah well, as long as they have fun, that's the main thing.

I doubt you’ve wasted your money - it’ll be crazy busy in the middle of the school holidays so they’ll greatly appreciate not having to factor in long queues 😄. What a fabulous gift - the rain will be fine!
