Hypothyroidism and weight

I have put on 7kg over the last year despite moving more and eating less 🙄. I have just been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and am taking medication- does this mean weight loss gets easier? Any experience? Thanks!

OMG I would definitely say yes!

My weight increased hugely between 2003 and 2013 for what appeared to be no reason. Prior this I was always size 10. As I was going through a horrendous menopause I just assumed this was the reason. By 2013 I was size 16-18 and very miserable as I am quite short too.

March 2013 was finally diagnosed with hypothyroidism, started low dosage of Levothyroxine and by September of the same year I had lost 3 st and was back to size 10 which I still am to this day despite only taking 75mg per day now of Levothyroxine.

Obviously this won’t be the case with everyone but it absolutely was with me.
I am so much fitter and happier in my 60’s than I ever was in my 50’s.

Good luck, Op! I know EXACTLY how you are feeling.

Thank you! This gives me hope!

As I understand it, it will. Thyroid issues affect metabolism. I believe underactive thyroid means your metabolism slows down so meds to regulate it back to normal should yield a better diet-exercise-weight loss ratio.

It takes time though. You don’t lose the weight as quickly as most people even when on the right dose of thyroxine. I’ve been on it for years, dosage regularly checked, but takes ages to lose weight if it creeps up which it still has a tendency to do.

Hi, I could do with a bit of advice. I've got hypothyroidism after having my hyperthyroidism treated a few years ago. My levonthyroxine dose has been fine but I've got some baby weight to lose and managed to lose about 4/5kg. I have to admit, I have been feeling not myself/unbalanced/anxious and when I lost weight a year ago the same thing happen. I suspect my dose of meds need to be altered so will arrange for bloods. Obviously all these mood swings make it really hard to keep this diet up 😞
Anyone have similar experience with weight loss, before having your meds altered??
