DS only using potty at home, not with trousers on

DS 2.5 pretty much trained himself in terms of using the potty at home, he decided last week he wanted to use it and since then had been taking himself off to use it for both poos and wees every time he needs totally unprompted (as long as is naked waist down). Since Friday we've pretty much stayed in to continue to try and master it which he totally has at home when he is naked waist down but as soon as I put trousers on him he wees through them. I don't know where to go from here, he's amazing at home but not with trousers on/out the house so not sure what to do now? Go back to pull ups when out the house (he's been wearing pull ups since he turned 1) ? He hasn't wore a day time nappy since Thursday as we've mainly been at home. But going out tomorrow as we can't spend another day at home another day! Advice much appreciated!

It's totally normal :) It takes a while for them to register the sensation before the wee arrives once covered.

Personally as he's doing so well I wouldn't go back to a nappy, but I'd try to preempt a wee/poo... have a potty with you at all times and start practising trying to have a wee 'just incase'.
My DGS came out of nappies at 2.5 and was the same.. naked he was awesome, dressed he forgot. So we made a game of it... we would go to the loo together and see who could wee first (him on his potty obviously :D ) and we'd go and have a little sit after breakfast when a poo was likely.
Be prepared to whip out a potty in the boot of the car, etc! And just have LOTS of spares.
DGS is 2.11 now and pretty reliable, but there are still times when he is too busy playing (soft play /toddler groups) and by the time he says 'I need a wee' there is a small damp patch, but he holds the rest in while we run for a loo . it just took time for him to be aware .
We also did joggers only (no pants ) for a week or two as it was less to get down at speed. ..he still needs help pulling pants UP but can usually get them down ok as long as he's not in jeans.

Others do go back in pullups, but my DD and I (I look after him 3 days a week) felt it would send confusing messages and so just went out prepared. DGS is is just coming out of his night nappy this week after he started waking dry and asking for it off to do a wee, so I think it was worth it.

Good luck... :)

I read somewhere (no idea where now) to do baggy shorts with no knickers. It worked really well for DD last summer. Then slowly transitioned to baggy knickers only, then put trousers on.
