7/7. I was 6 and remember coming in the day before my brother's birthday and see the news of the buses on the telly

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/03/2024 18:15

The investiture of Prince Charles in 1969, we watched it at school.

Chickoletta · 30/03/2024 18:15

Gulf War. I was 11 and in yr 6. A boy in class’s dad was posted out there.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 30/03/2024 18:15

The Challenger Disaster in 1986 when I was 5. I lived in the states at the time and it was a huge story there.

Then the Berlin Wall and start of the Gulf War.

Tisfortired · 30/03/2024 18:16

I remember coming downstairs one morning to the news about Princess Diana. After that probably 9/11. I’d come
home from school and my mum was watching the news but id noticed the teachers discussing something amongst themselves too so knew something was going on I was 10.

Thatcher becoming PM.

Actually, it would be the Silver Jubilee of 1977 if you count that as news, I don't remember the news bit, though, just the street party we had! Thatcher is the first thing I remember watching on the news.

curlywillow · 30/03/2024 18:18

Actually yes mine would be the silver jubilee too

DaintyYellowShoes · 30/03/2024 18:18

Somebody I'd never heard of called "Mrs Thatcher" had birds nesting in the roof of her house, or something like that. I assumed Mrs Thatcher must be a lovely lady but I wasn't sure why she was on the news. Oh for those sweet, naive days. I also remember feeling alarmed at the Falklands War starting. And the miners' strikes. And IRA activity.

schoolescapee · 30/03/2024 18:18

Berlin Wall coming down. Then gulf war.

ShadowBeam · 30/03/2024 18:18

Sarah Payne - I was around 6.

I can still picture her face now, poor girl.

DutchCowgirl · 30/03/2024 18:22

Chernobyl , I was 6. I remember my mum and gran worrying about what foods would be unsafe to eat.

bilgewater · 30/03/2024 18:23

The Silver Jubilee in 1977. I was at primary school, and remember us all making crowns to wear to the party we had at school, and everyone being presented with a commemorative coin in a presentation box - goodness knows what happened to that!

SiobhanSharpe · 30/03/2024 18:24

My first memory of a news event was the Profumo scandal in 1962/3 when the Conservative defence minister John Profumo was having an affair with a 'call girl' who was also sleeping with the Soviet naval attaché.
It was said the scandal contributed to the Tories losing the next general election. We didnt' even live in Britain at the time but it was huge news even in our expat community. (Although my parents definitely glossed over it for my benefit!)
I was about 10.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 30/03/2024 18:25

Moon landing.

Gilead · 30/03/2024 18:25

The shooting of JFK.
I’m old!

Totallymessed · 30/03/2024 18:26

The Iranian embassy siege in 1980. I remember watching the news as the SAS soldiers abseiled down the front of a London mansion building, all dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. I was terrified and thought a war was breaking out in London! I was 6 or 7.

Willmafrockfit · 30/03/2024 18:27

i seem to have spent most of my life oblivious to many news events, i remember Falklands because my DF was very serious about it, i was 15.

thatcher was meant to be a Good thing for women Easter Hmm

TidyDancer · 30/03/2024 18:28

I remember seeing Simon Weston on the news and the aftermath of Hillsborough but I don't remember them from being live on tv at the time but rather ongoing reporting in the years that followed (if that makes sense). The first two events I clearly remember seeing live were the England semi in Italia 90 and Terry Waite being released in 1991. I would've been 7 and 8 respectively.
