Berlin Wall coming down.. I was very young but has been there so it meant something to me.

I also remember Yasser Arafat being mentioned a lot but had no idea what it was really about.

Strong memories of the 1992 general election too. I was eight!

The Bradford Fire was the first one with a huge impact. It was on my 9th birthday and localish to us and parents of friends at the party there. They were ok but it was awful.

Then Chernobyl when I was 9/10 had a huge impact - very scary at that age to work out what the impact would be. Lots of playground chat about that one.

Telstar in 1962.

1984 miners strikes - I was 5

Newestname002 · 31/03/2024 10:37

I remember all of these, except the death of King George 6th as I wasn't born then. The shock of the Aberfan disaster. Also the oil spillage from the Exxon Valdez in 1989 and I was out and about in central London for the London transport bombings in 2005. 🌹

Vaguely remember Elvis dying

Strikes in the 70s but mainly due to the power cuts.

Iranian embassy siege is the first thing I remember well and John Lennon being shot

Strikes in the 70s but mainly due to the power cuts.

I remember this - three day week during Edward Heath's government. Working with lamps in the office for as long as possible to get work done (manual typewriters in those days) and having lamps and candles at home. Heating partly with paraffin heaters as we couldn't really use the electric storage heaters. Family actually talking to each other, reading books for as long as possible.

Also the "Winter of Discontent" general strikes in the late '70's under James Callahan "Crisis? What crisis?" when rubbish wasn't being collected and people went unburied.. 🌹

Berlin Wall coming down!

I was 11 and my dad wasn’t there for breakfast. I asked my mum where he was and he said “he’s gone to Berlin to get you a piece of wall”. And he was back within a couple of days with a piece of wall.

two weeks ago I was in Berlin and did a city tour. There was a young adult (20ish) from Australia on it who didn’t know about Berlin being a divided city. I thought that was mind blowing, but on reflection I think I’m just quite old.

It was 1989 I think?
Not that long a go and a massive part of history !

Lesley Whittle, kidnapped by The Black Panther. 1975, I was 10.

I was talking to someone from Kidsgrove about this a couple of weeks ago. Although Lesley Whittle was murdered less than half a mile from her house, neither she nor anyone she knows has ever heard of her.

How old are those people ? A few of us on here have named this as our first remembered news but we are all the same age .

Wow. You're a baby!

I was 17 when michael Jackson passed away in my first year of college.

I didn't think it was that long ago ,but it was 2009! I was 35 and working a night shift

HRTQueen · 31/03/2024 11:41

Iranian embassy siege we watched it unfold live while have Sunday dinner (at 1)

next big news story was Lennon being shot we couldn’t understand why my mum and aunt were crying

MrsKeats · 31/03/2024 11:44

The moon landings.
I was 3 but remember vividly being brought downstairs to watch it.

I was 6 and very annoyed when they interrupted Top Cat to announce JFK had been assassinated.

But it might have been even earlier listening to my mum and dad talking about Ian Brady and Myra Hindley and they had found another body.

The Moors Murders began in October 1963 and ended in 1965, which dovetails with JFK’s assassination. In my head the murders began a few years later than I thought

Goforyourguns · 31/03/2024 14:00

Elvis dying. Caroline Hogg one of Robert Blacks victims.

PhamieGowsSong · 31/03/2024 14:15

Charles and Diana's wedding, I was 4. Next major events were Ethiopia famine and then Live Aid.

2009 seems like yesterday but that was 15 years ago!

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/04/2024 12:13

The Apollo 11 moon landing.

ToWhitToWhoo · 01/04/2024 12:24

And- not a specific news item- but I remember being very aware from an early age of the atom bomb and its dangers. I remember thinking that if I ever got very rich, I would bribe 'all the soldiers' not to drop the atom bomb!

HarryUnicorn · 01/04/2024 12:32

Freddie Mercury dying, I would have been eight. Remember the radio news report vividly.

Arabels · 01/04/2024 12:37

Fall of the Berlin Wall. I would have been about 5. I think it was very legible to me as a child, and visual, which is why it stuck. And it was huge for my parents.

Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease · 01/04/2024 12:41

John Lennon being shot. I do vaguely remember Elvis dying too but John Lennon is the one that sticks in my mind.

madnessitellyou · 01/04/2024 12:44

The famine in Ethiopia and the Bradford football stadium fire. In those days you just watched what was on TV and I remember shouting for my mum to come into the living room as there was a very bad fire.

marshmallowfinder · 01/04/2024 13:08

John Lennon being shot. Also the Herald of Free Enterprise sinking.

TitaniasAss · 01/04/2024 13:12

Elvis dying. I was 10.
