Zeebrugge

Power cuts, 3 day week and strikes in 1973. I certainly remember the power cuts - would have been 4ish.

Me too, I remember how the news affected Saturday morning kids TV (Going Live, I think it was)

Jeannie88 · 30/03/2024 20:25

Tensions of the Cold War building, used to have nightmares about nuclear bombs! Xx

DeanElderberry · 30/03/2024 20:27

Aberfan. Seeing our schoolteachers, as well as the other adults in our lives, so devastated made an impression. Followed a few months later by the wreck of the Torrey Canyon oil tanker, with TV footage of dying seabirds.

After those, the news was a thing to sometimes notice, rather than something just for grownups.

Owl55 · 30/03/2024 20:29

The murder of Lesley Ann Downey at Christmas … horrendous

Lesley Whittle 1975
Genette Tate 1978

Both terrified me - I was 10 and 13 respectively 😢

Same.
There was also a case of a paper boy being murdered in Shropshire which was around a similar time - possibly later .

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 30/03/2024 20:31

Falklands, I was five. I remember asking my mum if we were going to get bombed and then my mum explaining how far away the Falklands were.

MS Herald of Free Enterprise disaster in 1987. I would have been around 5 at the time.

Me too, was coming on to say this, we lived in Kent so knew a family sadly involved. I was about 7 I think

BloodyHellKenAgain · 30/03/2024 20:38

I remember Maggie Thatcher becoming PM and I remember a hostage situation on a stationary plane where there was footage of bodies being pushed down the plane steps. I'm not sure when that was, late seventies maybe?

Claysta · 30/03/2024 20:38

The death of Lord Mountbatten in 1979, I was 8.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 30/03/2024 20:44

I do remember the power cuts etc of the 1970s but more that they were happening and how we were affected than as news articles . I remember Princess Anne's wedding as we had the day off school .

Onacuctustree · 30/03/2024 20:45

Zeebrugge ferry.
I have snatches of other things. But this was the first I saw as an on going disaster.

gotthearse · 30/03/2024 20:50

Elvis.

Libertysparkle · 30/03/2024 20:51

Princess Diana dying i was 15.

9/11 @ 19. The one that affected me the most.

theteddybear · 30/03/2024 20:51

The first ones I think back to are the Dunblane school shooting, I was 10 years old it was 1996, followed by Princess Diana dying in 1997.

Growlybear83 · 30/03/2024 20:51

I'm not sure which was first but I remember coming home from school on the day of the Aberfan disaster to find my mum crying in the kitchen. We lived in Orpington when I was a child and I remember the excitement when Eric Lubbock won the bye election. I can also remember the constant news reports every night on the Vietnam war.

Citrusandginger · 30/03/2024 20:53

JJathome · 30/03/2024 16:56

Elvis dying. I was very small but I remember my parents watching the news coverage and everyone outside Graceland. 1977.

That's mine too. Although to be fair I did have to ask who Elvis was. I was 8.

khaa2091 · 30/03/2024 20:55

The sinking of the Sir Galahad in The Falklands. I had just turned 3, my mother was watching the news while ironing.
My father had left the army 4 years earlier and was on the reserve list. His regiment (lots of close friends, mine and my sister’s godparents) had recently arrived on another troop ship.

LakeTiticaca · 30/03/2024 20:56

Aberfan (showing my age!!l) I didn't realise the extent of it at the time as was only little but heard my parents talking about it

WishesPromised · 30/03/2024 20:57

Diana Spencer marrying the Price of Wales.

Timeandtune · 30/03/2024 20:58

Aberfan . I would have been six or seven. I also have memories of Myra Hindley and the Profumo scandal.

Hibernatalie · 30/03/2024 20:59

Fred and Rose West I think - or Diana's death, whichever was first

FictionalCharacter · 30/03/2024 21:00

The Moors murders. I remember how upset my mum was. It wasn't until I was much older that I really understood why.
