I remember the fire at Windsor castle - must have been 8. I remember others like 9/11 and death of Diana, but I was younger for this.

I remember two things - my ignorance (and laziness to Google) prevent me from knowing when they were:

  1. OJ Simpson being in court/let off
  2. the war in Bosnia

Ps. In my head, watergaters were animals a bit like alligators but much friendlier. A fair full of them sounded amazing, a bit like going down water chutes with gentle dolphin/otter-like creatures...

Kings Cross fire, I was nearly 6. That along with the train crashes in the 80s made me terrified of trains for years

Berlin wall , I would have been 8/9 I wanted a bit of the concrete .

But I remember the Michael fish" there isn't going to be a hurricane " hurricane as one of my favourite big trees fell down . I would have been 5 but not sure if I watched the news reports

Mrbumpssmile · 30/03/2024 19:09

Thatcher winning the 1979 election. I was only 4, but remember standing outside the newsagent with my dad and the shopkeeper was crying, some neighbours were talking about the news and crying, and my dad started to cry. It ended with more customers joining in, all so distraught.

My parents explained what it was about briefly, although I was too young to understand of course, it was so huge, seeing adults cry, that I've never forgotten it.

The piper Alfa disaster

Omayra Sanchez slowly dying infront of news cameras over a period of days after being caught in a mudslide. She was only 13yo, I was a few years younger and couldn’t understand why they couldn’t pull her out.

BlastedPimples · 30/03/2024 19:13

Chernobyl

Daleksatemyshed · 30/03/2024 19:14

Aberfan, I was 7 or 8. The sight of all those parents desperately digging through the fallen slagheap to try and get the children out of the school was awful.

I feel even older - it was the moon landing!

The moon landing and the Andes air crash

CuteOrangeElephant · 30/03/2024 19:15

I'm from 1990. The first news story I remember is Take That breaking up! And after that Princess Diana's accident.

The first time I got really affected by the news is when I was seven years old and a girl around my age was brought to the Netherlands from Iraq by a journalist. She was extremely ill. I ended up sending her a letter and I was really upset when she died. I will never forget her name, Amal. It was the first realisation I had that bad stuff happens to children too.

itsgettingweird · 30/03/2024 19:16

I also remember zeebrugge and I was 6. For some reason my memory doesn't remember it as being before the Gulf war stories.

dottydodah · 30/03/2024 19:16

I remember The Moon landings vaguely .Also Princess Annes wedding ( DP Bought Colour Television specially)

SignoraVolpe · 30/03/2024 19:17

JFK being shot in Dallas in 1963. I was 6. My parents were so upset.

LunaMay · 30/03/2024 19:19

Azaria chamberlain. A dingo took my baby.
Would have been late 80s so I'm guessing it was back in the news due to them being pardoned.

First one I remember being upset about was Freddy Mercury

year24 · 30/03/2024 19:20

Storm/gale force winds in the 80’s strangely (no idea why I remember this, I was around 4/5)
other than that, princess Diana’s death.

NomenNudum · 30/03/2024 19:20
