If you are very overweight

Do you find people like Lizzo empowering?

Do you think it's good to have bigger people represented and do you think that body positivity around being over weight is a positive thing generally?

I find the health at every size empowering and inspiring - but as in you can eat well and exercise at any size rather than "I'm really healthy at a size 30 but I eat crap all day and don't move" type of thing
IYSWIM

I'm obese, a size 16 and 5ft 10 and I like seeing fashion influencers who are a similar size and also people exercising who are my size

I'm fat - 18-20. Nothing is positive about it, I'm trying to lose weight.

frozendaisy · 30/03/2024 14:36

Are you very overweight @0rangesandlemons? You don't say.

NoCloudsAllowed · 30/03/2024 14:50

I'm a bit on the fence. On the one hand, carrying extra weight is definitely not good in health terms. And all the fat positivity stuff is just young people looking beautiful despite the fat not because of (come back in 20 years and let's see how you're going then, darling)

On the other hand, it's good to show that being fat doesn't have to mean you hide until you meet some societal acceptable size requirement. Most people who are fat stay that way and they deserve happy lives as much as anyone else.

Look back at old programmes to see how far we've come - was just watching some Kath and kim from early 00s and had to turn it off, kim is awful in many ways but a big part of the joke is that she's maybe a size 12-14 but thinks she's beautiful.

Fat haters want fat people to go into a room a starve ourselves until we are thin enough to come out and meet their approval for participating in life. So any fat person living their life unapologetically gets my vote.

Fat hatred is a form of ableism. It's also very sexist and ageist - 11% of women get lipoedema, most diagnosed in their mid forties or later. So basically 10%+ of women will never be good enough for the fat haters and should be locked up until they show they can conform to thinness. Except that they can't because it's a fat disorder, it doesn't diet off.

Ten percent. That's a huge number of women that don't get considered because they are older and fat. And I really hope that when some of the fat hating munsnetters find their bodies are exploding in size complete unrelated to what they eat or how much they exercise that the universe looks kindly at them because I don't think I will be able to.

You miss the point. This isn’t about fat shaming. This is about the fact you can be fit and fat at 40 but at 50 or 60 it can get painful and pretty awful

A body positive influencer in their 20s or 30s can’t comprehend what pain and health issues being overweight can bring

LegArmpits · 05/04/2024 00:33

More to the point, she's a dick.

Nonewclothes2024 · 05/04/2024 01:08

I'm overweight. Being fat is not attractive. I

Ketzele · 05/04/2024 01:12

I'm an older woman and fat, though have spent most of my life normal-sized or thin (eating disorders). What I most want is for people to shut up about fatness as though it defines us as people. I want public figures to be diverse, yes, but not because I need fat role models, I just think people shouldn't be excluded from public life for being fat.

Yes, I would like to be thinner, because its healthier and less tiring. I've had eating disorders since childhood and there is FA help available. I am an expert in why I am fat, and so bored with skinny women patronising me as though they have some special wisdom that I lack. I don't need to be 'represented', I just need the world to not be so obsessed with what women look like.

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 05/04/2024 01:16

Being vegan does not mean you have a decent diet. Onr of my vegan friends lives on pasta and potatoes.

but no find her zero empowering, more crass and vulgar (see recent accusations)

fairymary87 · 05/04/2024 01:39

I hate it, I hate encouraging obesity and over eating

Queenchwis · 05/04/2024 03:10

Whilst I think representation is good showing what clothes look like in different sizes for advertising I don’t think we should be over glamourising obesity. I have gained and lost weight and feel 10* better when I’m running, going to the gym and confident in myself. We shouldn’t pretend being fat is good.

@Ketzele

yes, exactly!!

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 05/04/2024 10:02

I’m currently very overweight having been very slim - I hate it, it negatively impacts every aspect of my life. I don’t find the body positivity movement inspiring at all 😢

Pinkpinkpink15 · 05/04/2024 10:04

@ehb102

I totally agree with your post.

And I really hope that when some of the fat hating munsnetters find their bodies are exploding in size complete unrelated to what they eat or how much they exercise that the universe looks kindly at them because I don't think I will be able to

you're kinder than me though, I don't hope the universe looks on them kindly, I'd like them to get what they dish out.

along with the 'they can diet', type posters. I can't lose weight. I eat a healthy low carb diet & not much of it.

I exercise.

I had a virus many years ago & it fucked my metabolism, and I got diabetes. I was 7 stone at the time. I was hoping some research from the Covid virus causing the rise in Diabetes would help me. But nothing yet.
