What one-pot buffet dish can I make for extremely fussy guests

Got family coming over and there are 8 of them. They are all very conservative / unhealthy in what they usually eat, and so I've no idea what to make. It will need to be buffet style / lap food due to lack of space.

Was thinking of making one pot of something hot with salads. But every time I think of something I feel like they won't like it. We eat very healthy and fresh food often spicy and lots of plants. They usually eat really bland and UHP stuff, basically the very worst of "British" food and the reason NHS is on its knees but don't get me started freezer food, virtually no veg, and for special occasions Christmas they have things like Iceland "party food", crisps, pork pies etc.

What can I make that's healthy and tasty which they don't turn their nose up. I don't want to buy the crappy UHP they would choose as I don't ever eat that stuff and nor do my DC, but at the same time I want to make something everyone enjoys.

I’m a low UPF wanker who would also turn my nose up at an Iceland prawn ring, but i cannot deal with the OP’s venom here as the thread goes on

plain food really isn’t that deep. Are you a bad cook or something?

ok they won’t eat pulled pork, mac and cheese…

so get some good quality sausages from
the butches, mash, gravy, garden peas. Job done

it really isn’t hard

and lol at elfy France. Have you spent much time there? Didn’t see the kids eating milka and butter sandwiches at pick up time, clearly

LifeExperience · 29/03/2024 12:15

You're the host--your job is not to improve your guests' diets, it is to offer them food they will enjoy. Do that and don't offer to host again if you can't provide hospitality without looking down your nose at your guests.

MerryChristmasToYou · 29/03/2024 12:15

Thanks @Amberlady & @TakeOnFlea

OP you also have some very odd ideas. How can a one-pot meal be 'lap food' but a pasty, specifically designed to make meat, potatoes and veg portable for lunch, isn't? This

Never claimed to be an expert on healthy eating. What is UHP in the world of food please?

Its a typo

unconditional83 · 29/03/2024 12:18

@Octopussingthieves this is what I dont get about food culture in this country. Why does it make a person a "snob" if they favour healthy fresh food over UHPs?

This whole thread is about trying to accommodate other people's tastes. Otherwise I could just serve them what I want to eat and be done with it!

I would make a big paella and have it as the centrepiece as a crowd pleaser, with some sausages, cheese, smoked salmon and nice bread and maybe a salad at the side in case they won't eat the paella.

They definitely wouldn't eat paella, nor the cheese on the side!

Just make pizza

soupfiend · 29/03/2024 12:18

Amberlady · 29/03/2024 12:11

AH found it on the Google - Ultra High Processed, every day is a school day.

Oh I take it back, not a typo then

Another fucking category of 'unhealthy food'

But remember, OP isnt just sneery about UHP, or UPF, or high performance tyres or whatnot, she is also sneery about people that like 'bland food'.

Because those people need edukayshun.

It's not your preferences that make you a snob, it's your attitude.

NotThisAgainSeriously · 29/03/2024 12:19

OP- given all your posts, what I would advise is that you don’t host these people at all. HTH.

Do that then, serve up what you like. Nothing wrong with that

The reason you are a horrible snob is because you think you're better than them because of what you eat and where you shop.

Its nothing to do with your own health

I eat virtually everything scratch cooked, from ingredients. But I dont look down on people that dont. I also like far too much spice and heat than is good for me (reflux), I also dont look down on people that dont like that.

graceinspace999 · 29/03/2024 12:21

I was looking forward to reading lots of one pot ideas for feeding the lower orders here - so disappointing.

Anyway my suggestion is chip butties.

Skin-on frozen chips from Aldi.
Large white sliced loaves.
Butter.

Use available child labour to butter bread.

Cook chips on large oven trays.

Serve with salt, vinegar and Bramble ketchup.

OP you’ll never eat kale again 😉

SuffolkUnicorn · 29/03/2024 12:22

Superiority complex hosting

Nightblindness · 29/03/2024 12:22

Also loling at the supposed good quality food available in every French service station. Last summer we drove round most of the regions of France and sometimes the only choice for a sandwich in the service station was ham and cheese on a white baguette. OK, there may well have been healthier options for a sit down meal, but the sandwich/take away salad range was woeful compared to what you can buy in an average UK service station these days.

Having a preference and wanting to cater to people's dietary preferences is one thing, the condescending nature of your op is another.

Octopussingthieves · 29/03/2024 12:09

Don't drag Warburton's toastie. Thick cut is excellent sandwich bread and I won't hear a word against it.

Edited

I agree with you. I bet this OP would sneer at it.

Meanwhile, her guests get nice sandwiches.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 29/03/2024 12:25

Pretty amazed you’re inviting guests like that round. I wouldn’t. Do your family a nice lunch, and just get some bread, cheese and ham for your guests.

TakeOnFlea · 29/03/2024 12:27

It's all the "in this country" and "my perfect children don't eat Iceland crap" that's making you a snob OP.

As for the French service stations. Fucking pissing myself. The only options are salty processed crisps and white baguettes smeared with butter, ham and cheese!

At least in the fridges at Iceland you can get a nice pot of pasta salad and some cooked chicken.

It's not snobby to prefer healthy food.

It is snobby to be sneering about your guests because they don't share your preferences

I love the idea of the pulled pork but they don't eat pork! They will eat bacon etc but hate normal pork.

So do pulled brisket or chicken instead.

A big tray of roast chicken pieces.

Everybody look out for a thread starting about having to go to over to eat at somebody’s house who is super healthy, and possibly slightly snobby, and how to handle said evening.

excelledyourself · 29/03/2024 12:36

Send them this thread and ask if any of the suggestions appeal.

I think you'd soon find your problem solved.

Kelly51 · 29/03/2024 12:37

What is UHP? Just order a chippy tea.
Iceland food isn't crap BTW.
Is this a joke?!!

This is being a snob, sneering at people, not nice OP
