Parents given the option to have disabled children removed from their photograph.

Who on Gods green earth thought that was a good idea?!

Gosh, that's truly awful. It's made me feel a bit sick to read that.

I’ve told you what my employer’s policy was and why they had that policy. For some reason you have seen fit to turn that into a personal accusation against me. I have reported your post.

Because you are justifying the exclusion of disabled children. That's why. And continuing to do so in your subsequent posts.

@AnnaKristie many schools in the authority/Scotland do - in this authority it's one per cluster. Doesn't mean that the children are 'hub pupils' they are part of a mainstream class that attend the hub. There's a big difference, the latter being way more inclusive.

@DinnaeFashYersel
Carry on being judgemental about @Bluefell post,
and i will tempted to report about you too @DinnaeFashYersel about your nasty accusing judgemental post..

crumblingschools · 29/03/2024 09:59

A lot of the photographers used by Tempest are freelance. They take the photos and adjust them and then load them onto Tempest website. So the photos chosen are not down to Tempest.

crumblingschools · 29/03/2024 10:00

How many parents would have chosen the adjusted photo?

Please do report and MN can decide.

Justifying the exclusion of a child with disabilities is in my opinion - ableism.

EDITED to say I have reported it myself and will leave it to MN.

I’m in England so can’t comment on Scotland hopefully it works out and is inclusive, I just know in England a lot of the time the la forcing disabled children into mainstream classes is done in the name of inclusion but it’s really just because it’s cheaper and inevitability doesn’t work out as true inclusion of a child in a mainstream class would require funding properly. My child is at special school now and is included in everything they do that he wants to, when he was at mainstream he couldn’t do after school activities, they often didn’t want him to go on trips, they’d have sports coaches or musicians come in and he wasn’t included in those sessions , I could go on and on. Things are done in the name of inclusion but my child was never more excluded from everything when he was in mainstream, it only highlights more that they are different and no wonder they end up feeling worthless. Our experience was by no means unique.

But if that’s their business model to use freelancers they still have to take responsibility for things that are being done in their name even if they didn’t know at first

SerendipityJane · 29/03/2024 10:30

Not sure why anybody would be surprised ? This seems to be a perfectly logical development since the country decided going back to the 70s was the plan and the less able were safely kept out of sight.

It's all the things posters have correctly identified it as, except surprising.

It's a falling tide, exposing increasingly vulnerable members of society, And women are affected before men as the water falls.

needsomewarmsunshine · 29/03/2024 10:39

I was gobsmacked to read this news item, totally disgusting.
I would, however, be interested to know how many wanted the edited out version though. Would def. judge people like that. It comes across as a bit pre WWll 2 in the very early days when certain groups were murdered as 'experiments'.

fightingthedogforadonut · 29/03/2024 10:39

DH and I just discussing this over breakfast this morning. If anyone pulled that kind of crap with my SEND kid my wrath would be nuclear....☢️

Ap24 · 29/03/2024 10:42

I don't understand why anyone would want a group photo that excludes certain pupils. It's not like class photos are ones you'd display on your wall, surely the whole point is to remember all your classmates?

cerisepanther73 · 29/03/2024 10:45

@needsomewarmsunshine

"It comes across as pre world war 2 when certain groups were murdered as experiments ect,"

Over the top dramatic statement in your post saying that..!

AhBiscuits · 29/03/2024 10:46

Tempest are fucking shit. We've been complaining to the school about them for years. Might be worth another prod to try and get them to use someone else while this is in the news.

AhBiscuits · 29/03/2024 10:48

I don't get the school saying they knew nothing about it. Wasn't it questioned when the photo was taken?

Maybe over the top dramatics are called for ?

Or do we all keep quiet and just let people "get on with it" ?

My high school had over 1,000 pupils and was one of 8 that size in the borough. Yet not one had a pupil in a wheelchair. And that's not because there weren't any. But that was OK because people in wheelchairs didn't go out. Certainly not in my youth.

Those are not days I am waiting to return, and if some drama stops it, then lights, camera, action darlings.

they were apparently airbrushed out

crumblingschools · 29/03/2024 10:54

Many class photos are done in groups now and then photoshopped together, not children all sitting/standing in rows. So I assume one group could have been excluded from one version of the class photo. But not sure how photographer would know who the kids with SEND were (unless obvious with a wheelchair)

@Morph22010 I assume they will be looking at how they can prevent something like this happening in the future

SerendipityJane · 29/03/2024 10:56

Morph22010 · 29/03/2024 10:53

So the school returned the proofs and requested them unedited ?

Complicity - it's a great word when you know what it means.

SerendipityJane · 29/03/2024 10:56

Maybe they could wear a lanyard ? Or a badge ?

RaraRachael · 29/03/2024 10:59

I worked in the neighbouring LA to this and the guy we had from Tempest was horrible. He was rude and abrupt with the children and, when a boy didn't follow his instructions, he said "For goodness sake, are you deaf?" The young lad was hearing impaired.

Our school didn't ask Tempest back and just uses a local photographer now.

crumblingschools · 29/03/2024 10:59

@SerendipityJane I’m not saying the photographer should know. Also not sure the school get to see the proofs.

RaraRachael · 29/03/2024 11:02

We used to get proofs and hand them out to pupils but it sounds like they're emailed directly to parents.

As a teacher I'd have been asking why the photographer was doing this unless it was one of those naff ones where they take them in groups and morph them together with terrible props.
