If you have a tv how big is it?

I was given a television by my parents as a birthday gift when I was 22, its 32 inches and still have it now in my own family home and it's now 10 years old

We don't have a huge house but having spent the last month housesitting at my mums I've come home and my tv looks so tiny

I love tv but never wanted the tv to dominate the room, could I stand to go a bit bigger?

32" but struggle with subtitles. I've agonised about going bigger, but 40" should be about right I hope. I made DH spray a piece of cardboard that size black and propped it up where it would go. It does look huge to me! Still waiting for old one to die though.

I looked into getting a fancy wall arm that went up down and sideways so we could tuck it away somehow, but the cost was nearly as much as the tv itself! So any new tv will sit on a low table like the 32" one does.

Coastalcreeksider · 29/03/2024 09:16

32" in the lounge, 24" in the dining room. I hate TVs that dominate a room. One of my friends husband has just bought a 55" TV, he does watch it all day pretty much as he's disabled but if you go into the lounge, that's all you can see.

I think they look even worse when mounted on the wall too.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/03/2024 09:43

32 inch. Dh went to buy it and I said if he came back with a bigger one I’d make him take it back.
Each to their own, but personally I hate a mega TV dominating the room.

Also have a 24 inch in the kitchen.

Ours is the size of a matchbox. We hide it in a drawer when ever a snobby friend comes round.

32" but it's on its last legs. We're going to get a new smart TV that will be larger. Have drawn some squares on the wall as this one will be wall-mounted! Somewhere between 50" to 65". Not going to hurry the decision. No other TVs.

I only watch TV in the evening for an hour or so, the rest of the day I don't have it on, contrasting with several years ago when I'd always have the news on. I decided that was a time vampire and so do other (hopefully!) more productive things with my time.

I like a small TV. Big TVs give the impression of prioritising television over other, more valuable cultural pursuits.

Oh we do too! Nasty, nasty things

HappyMavis · 29/03/2024 15:47

I'm sorry, what's a TV? You see I'm very busy with valuable cultural pursuits, and scrolling mumsnet. Thanks.

LyricalGangsta · 29/03/2024 15:55

52" but house is a Victorian villa with very high ceilings so it looks ok
My 32" broke down and I was given this one to replace so I was happy

drawnfrommemory · 29/03/2024 16:08

We've had a 32' for the past 15 years, but upgraded this year to a 43' which was the biggest that would fit in the space in our alcove shelves.

Where do other people in a Victorian house have theirs in the living room - I don't think we could go much bigger as there just isn't space for it to go where it would be comfortable to watch.

Our largest is 76 inches. DH wants to replace it with a projector and 135 inch screen.

that isn’t in our main living room near the kitchen. I don’t know what size the tv is in that room, but it’s a much more normal size and fits the smaller space.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/03/2024 16:30

Mine has just about enough room to squeeze in among my thousands of books.

WhatACluster · 29/03/2024 18:00

Main tv is 85 inches (it’s massive and like being at the cinema especially if the surround sound thingy is on)

The one in our bedroom is 75 inches (again massive!!)

Kids are 55 (I think 🤔 I’d have to check with Dh)

Dh is a big tv fan and buys a new one every 3-5 years 🤷‍♀️

GasPanic · 29/03/2024 18:25

Depends on how far you sit away from it and what you want to watch.

Sports a big tv really helps - for example watching football the players are quite small so bigger tv helps you identify them. In F1 it helps you read the displays better.

I have 4 a 32" which is not really up to much. A 43" qled Samsung which was great value for money, a 48" oled which is a fantastic tv but was really expensive and a 40" hisense that I have just bought for mounting on the bedroom wall. The Hisense is really insipid in terms of picture quality.

I would say if you are about 6ft-8ft or more away from the tv 40" is fine. Less than 6ft then I would say 32". Much more than 8ft I would say 50" or bigger. But there is stuff on line that will give you the optimum sizes vs distance that you can search on.

Yerroblemom1923 · 29/03/2024 18:37

40 inches. The husband bought it. I'd happily live without one. It's on a wooden chest not on the wall. We only have the one. I don't believe in tvs in bedrooms.

FixTheBone · 29/03/2024 18:47

Mazuslongtoenail · 28/03/2024 20:12

It depends on the room size though. There’s calculates. Although ours suggested 80 and we went with 65 which is plenty, so I think they come up on the large side.

The calculators are generally designed to balance screen size, viewing distance and resolution. The only consideration is optimal image quality as if it were a dedicated cinema room.

Most people also consider price and aesthetics in that mix, but the calculators obviously wont!

hiredandsqueak · 29/03/2024 19:10

Ours is 40 inch in the living room. Ds has a 50 inch in his room. The living room is pretty big but don't want a bigger TV. Don't watch it much so would think it a waste of money.

RoseMartha · 29/03/2024 19:11

24" in lounge. It's about 7/8 years old.
Would possibly get a slightly bigger one when it needs replacing but no bigger than 32".

DaftyLass · 29/03/2024 19:14

Ours is a 50" we got for free 8 years ago, tbh I'm surprised it's still going strong.
If{when} it dies, I don't care if we replace it or not

Floralnomad · 29/03/2024 19:16

Our main one is 55” ( I think) we could go bigger as it’s a big room but it fits well the size it is . We have 42” ones in the bedroom and second lounge .

HangerOverTreeFruit · 29/03/2024 19:18

43 inches because it fits in that space but honestly if I could go bigger I would. We bought it recently from Costco and it honestly looked tiny in our trolley compared to those TVs that looked like a free standing wall. Once home it was the right size but I did feel envy for those who can go bigger.

In the bedroom, a 32 inch because it fits inside an Ikea Pax 100cm wide wardrobe and I can hide it away.

I should say that the 42 inch lounge one is my computer monitor Grin and what I am using for MN right now typing with a wireless keyboard. I have a teeny box computer, very powerful but then I live with IT nerds, Dh and the adult DCs.
