If you have a tv how big is it?

I was given a television by my parents as a birthday gift when I was 22, its 32 inches and still have it now in my own family home and it's now 10 years old

We don't have a huge house but having spent the last month housesitting at my mums I've come home and my tv looks so tiny

I love tv but never wanted the tv to dominate the room, could I stand to go a bit bigger?

65" in the living room and the old 52" in one of the bedrooms. I couldn't go smaller. I'm too used to having a massive screen in my face.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 28/03/2024 22:41

32" in the bedroom 40" in the sitting room. I don't like huge TV's personally, or rather, I don't like them being the focul point of a room.

Gowlett · 28/03/2024 22:42

Too fucking big! I hate it. Never watch it.
DH & DS love the damn thing, though…

Alwayswonderedwhy · 28/03/2024 22:42

I don't actually know but it's definitely smaller than most people's. I don't like TVs to be a main feature though.

underseige05 · 28/03/2024 22:46

Ours is 75" in the front room but it fits perfectly above the mantle over our log burner. The old 43" from that room is now in our room. Its barely watched apart from when one of us is ill.

RedRobyn2021 · 28/03/2024 21:30

What do you do instead?

My daughter goes to sleep and I usually come down for 8ish then just watch tv for an hour before going to get ready for bed

Various really……so after 8pm I will do one or more of the following……chill on ipad on social media….talk to my partner….take dog for a walk ( around 9pm) …..evening swim with my DD ( we live in walking distance of our local pool) …..phone my Mum…..catch up with WhatsApp messages…..scrabble with my partner…..pub with friends…..pub with partner to watch big screens with our football team we support…..pay bills ……online shopping ……sewing ( mainly dance completion stuff for my GDs ….but currently making some Roman blinds)…..read books …..and sometimes ( if I’m in on my own) I just sit and watch the flames in the log burner and enjoy being warm and cosy…..I go to bed around 1130pm

When we got our latest tv adult ds did some research online which worked out what size tv to get based on how far you sit from the screen.

Ours is 55" and I would have gone bigger but it wouldn't fit the alcove without restricting the view a bit. I'm not puritanical about tv watching versus other activities. But I am fussy that it's not high up on the wall or anything other than sofa height.

Blanketpolicy · 28/03/2024 22:52

42” but because it is 14-15 years old it has a big frame,

ds’s 42” is much smaller looking, if we were buying again I’d happily go around that size as a minimum, but not much bigger.

Lucythecleaner · 28/03/2024 22:53

43 inch in the living room and 32 inch in my sons bedroom

mollyfolk · 28/03/2024 22:54

I think ours is 44 but it's massive for the room. I only bought it because I lost all sense of perspective in the shop - it looked tiny in the shop. It's on an arm and can be pushed back against the wall and it looks "ok" when it's off - you can also put a picture on it so it looks like a picture on the wall.

It all depends on the size of your room.

Giggorata · 28/03/2024 22:55

I don't know how you measure them, whether side to side or corner to corner.

Anyway, it's huge, but in a very large room. My son gave it to me, it's his old one.
It too, is on an arm thing that comes right out at any angle and gets pushed back against the wall when not in use. The wall it's on is quite dark, so it isn’t too obtrusive.

It is absolutely brilliant for the Snooker.
Occasionally, we watch a film on it.
Anything else, I will normally watch on my iPad.

We have a smaller one in another room, where DH likes to watch the news, the blade making programme and the programmes where they mend things.

PlayOurSong · 28/03/2024 23:03

We have lots of tvs ranging from 43 to 75 inches, depending on the room. We still find time for other things.

Mumsnet generally doesn’t like tvs, never mind big ones. Having them wall mounted is like a criminal offence on here. 😅

PlayOurSong · 28/03/2024 23:06

I meant to say, there are ‘calculators’ to work out the best tv size based on how far away you’ll be viewing it from if you google. It might help you to decide.

FussyPud · 28/03/2024 23:51

43” downstairs, quite small room. Used perhaps once a month as nobody really uses the living room. There’s a 21” one connected to a games console upstairs that gets used a little more frequently.

We’re not massive telly people. I’d much rather nap. :)

LaWench · 28/03/2024 23:53

55" in the living room, 40" in the Den and bedroom.
We used to have 37" but they are impossible to find these days.

NcSpookyPG · 28/03/2024 23:56

55 inch living room
43 inch in our bedroom
DS has 50 inch in his room
DD has 32" in hers
Other 2 kids have PCs so small monitors, no TVs.

TheSolstices · 29/03/2024 00:13

I don’t know, but small enough to live in a cupboard. I know I said ‘how small do you have in stock?’ in the shop.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 29/03/2024 00:57

We only have one. Its 19". Plenty big enough for our needs.

NC03 · 29/03/2024 01:51

42 I think. It's not a huge room so didn't want any bigger

grinandslothit · 29/03/2024 05:39

Since you love TV, you might as well get a big one with all the bells and whistles.

I think there are some online calculators to find the best size for your size of your room

IloveAslan · 29/03/2024 05:59

Mine is a 32" and I'm okay with it. It's the only TV I have.

Kalevala · 29/03/2024 06:06

Mine's a 32 inch and I'm thinking of getting rid of it altogether as it's not used.

Caspianberg · 29/03/2024 06:13

40 inch. It replaces a 32 inch which was 10+ years old and died. The 40 seems massive in comparison (and we have had it 2 years already)

We also rarely watch tv in evenings. It’s mainly used for Ds kids shows. By the time I’m get Ds to bed and asleep it’s about 8.30pm. 8.30-9.30/10 I tidy/ have bath/ sort admin online/ finish work emails or look up something/ paint nails/ FaceTime my parents (time difference)/ chat with dh/ prep something for next day if early start. I’m usually in bed by 9.30-10pm and read a bit before sleep.

ObliviousCoalmine · 29/03/2024 06:15

50 inches. It's horrible. I'd like a normal sized one please.

RecycleMePlease · 29/03/2024 08:10

I have a 65 incher in the kitchen too, but none in the bedrooms.. I don't know why, I don't like them in the bedrooms.

Oh and a projector in the spare room (only room with a big, pale wall) - so that's what - 100inches?

And a 55 inch in the playroom for the xbox

Plus we all have tablets, and that's what the kids prefer anyway.. The TV's are almost exclusively used by me (sometimes DS2 plugs his switch into one, and there's movie nights, but otherwise they prefer their tablets so they can watch whereever they are, rather than being forced to sit on the settee in the living room)
