Weed smell - what can I do about ot?

Elderly next door neighbours are prolific weeks smokers. They have always been so, but usually only bothered me in the summer when windows were open. However I think they have recently ramped up the smoking as the smell is permeating through the walls.

It's worst in the upstairs adjoining rooms, so the bathroom and DC2's bedroom. I thought the houses were pretty solidly built, we don't get much noise from them, but OMG the smell. It's really starting to bother me amd im worried about the DCs health.

I know I could knock on and ask them to desist, but they have health problems so I assume it's medicinal.

Any tips for getting rid/masking the smell without resorting to plug ins etc? Opening windows doesn't help as it's outside as well. In fact I can smell it walking up my own garden path. Of they open thier front door it's overpowering.

Have you looked into statutory nuisance? Smells are covered.

Alternatively: call police and let them work out if it's being used legally or not.

They are such lovely people I'd hate to get them into trouble. But it's affecting my quality of life. I should talk to them really

An air purifier really helped when my next door neighbour's weed smell used to waft into my house.

Sounds like they're growing it if the smell is that strong

Oh FFS did you not read, they are elderly and use it for medicinal purposes? 🙄

@Eminybob you say they are really nice people. Just have a chat with them and explain the problem. Perhaps they could confine it to a room/rooms that are not attached to yours, or even bake it instead of smoking.

MsFaversham · 27/03/2024 22:57

I’d second an air purifier. I’ve got neighbours with a wood burner and it can smell strongly in my flat when the wind is in a certain direction. It really helps and you can see the levels of particulates. It might help you make your case to the neighbours too.

How do you think the police are going to do that?

They can't force entry, they're never going to get a warrant and it's not like the neighbours are going to admit to smoking it, are they?

MsFaversham · 27/03/2024 22:59

Can’t edit but some models double up ad dehumidifiers. Very useful for drying clothes in the winter.

No, the OP has rather oddly assumed it's for medicinal purposes, like elderly people don't smoke for pleasure?

BlueEyesBrownHair · 27/03/2024 23:09

Anonymous call to the police- they are growing it if you can smell it that badly

bumblebee1000 · 27/03/2024 23:21

If they are growing it, it only smells when its flowering....the stuff they are buying is probably potent stuff as that seems to be whats being sold these days...i lived in barcelona for years and its legal to grow a few plants, my dentist had about 6 on her balcony and the smell was strong when flowering !

Crowgirl · 27/03/2024 23:23

Air purifier but also ask them to get one.
I'm sure they don't want to be stinking out your house but they won't know about it unless you tell them. Just brave the chat and remind yourself you're doing them a favour by telling them.

SayFuckTheLemonsAndBail · 27/03/2024 23:25

Yeah, an air purifier.

I very occasionally have it myself for a chronic illness and I smoke it next to an air purifier. I don't smoke it enough to be immune to the smell and it makes a huge difference when I come back in to the room.

I've got a mini one that plugs into a USB for camping and that will clear out a tent on its own.

(In case anyone wants to get judgemental, the alternative is crying in pain and being unable to move, so shove it.)

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 27/03/2024 23:27

Ask them to buy a dry herb vape.. l have one for cannabis.. it's one that stops it smelling.
I use it for my horrific pain.

Maddy70 · 27/03/2024 23:28

Speak to them. If they are growing it. They can move the plants to a different room

Just say it's very strong in your childs room and you are worried about the passive effect on your children

I love the smell. My neighbours sit on their balcony and smoke and I'm like the bisto kid ;)

Eminybob · 28/03/2024 03:26

Sounds like an air purifier is the way to go.
Can anyone recommend one please? Just had a look on line and they seem to vary wildly in price.

I got this one when I had heavily smoking neighbours. The smell was everywhere...

I think your neighbours should be the people buying it!!

Still talk to them though. If they are nice people they'll feel terrible about the impact.

As someone else suggested, they could smoke elsewhere/use a purifier themselves.
