Why are all glasses soo big now?

Got new glasses today and I hate them, far too big for my face and they were about the smallest the shop had. They are these ones https://www.visionexpress.com/glasses/Ralph-by-Ralph-Lauren-RA-7020-599/805289395454

Do smaller ones actually exist anymore? Why are they all soo big?

Glasses direct have a huge range of glasses big and small.

@RottingInBed "But anyway yes I hate all these ugly orthopaedic Deirdre Barlow glasses that have come back into fashion."

oh, that's what they remind me of! Yes, I've really noticed they're back in fashion.

Utini · 27/03/2024 21:08

I used to get glasses from the teen range as everything in the adult range was far too big. Last time I needed some I found Boots had quite a few petite frames, these are what I currently have:

I usually get my glasses online but went to specsavers recently to have a look and was so bored by their selections - just a bunch of the same colours, shapes and sizes at various prices. Very uninspiring and boring - I’ve ordered from an American site Fytoo who have a great range - just upload your prescription

Fytoo looks great, did you have to pay import taxes?

FussyPud · 27/03/2024 21:20

I had the opposite problem for years, I’ve got quite a big, squarish face so need something bigger with a cat eye shape to look remotely ok.

The moral of this story is that opticians selections are never the best.

Like others, I now buy online. I’ve used goggles4u, glasses direct, firmoo, vooglam and probably a couple of others over the last few years. Never very expensive, always well made, and I’ve never paid import taxes.

goneaway2 · 27/03/2024 21:54

They looked ok in the shop, the lighting in the shop made them look a lighter shade and they looked purple. Now I've got them home, they are far too dark for my face, are in fact a dark tortiose shell and the frame is wider than my face. To top it all off, I asked for anti glare, suitable for driving at night. They aren't, at least if they are it's not working. The assistant also persuaded me into their own brand sunglasses with transitions lenses when I orignally wanted designer, they are also too big and I hate them when the lenses are clear on them. Plus she said I couldn't have them polarised, and I've found I could have if they were a different lens colour.

It took me ages to find new glasses too as I hated all the ones in Boots, Specsavers, Costco and Vision Express.

I eventually found some I quite liked in Asda.

Came here to recommend these! The deals they have are amazing. I always get the ones called Taylor as I find it so hard to find glasses that suit - my big nose makes me look like one of those nose, glasses and moustache masks. Last time I got them for just £15 with no frills.

I wish big glasses suited me as I find seeing the frames makes me feel like I can't see anything.

Do the people who buy big frames have them resting on their cheeks? Do they not find this uncomfortable?

I have a big face, I need big frames. I always used to have to buy men's glasses. Never found that they rest on my cheeks.

For once this is a trend I can welcome.

ButtockUp · 28/03/2024 09:19

It depends on your prescription.
Some prescriptions require larger lenses.

RandomMess · 28/03/2024 09:21

ASDA do a decent petite range and a teens range.

Try having a big giant head and face, but a prescription that mandates a frame with teeny tiny little lenses.

Ideally I'd probably end up with something like this.

Why are all glasses soo big now?
GrumpyPanda · 28/03/2024 09:41

Had the same thing a year ago. I'd picked a frame that was open at the bottom and the result was much bigger and rounder than I anticipated. Gave me a moonfaced look and also dug into my cheeks. I made them re-do the whole thing (claimed I couldn't wear them because they'd aggravate my rosacea) and actually picked a different frame. Very few slimmer frames on offer though. One slimmer one I liked I got shocked looks - "but that's a men's model!" Lady I dgaf..

Those are the type of glasses opticians try to get me to buy. Small, round ones like Harry Potter.

CormorantStrikesBack · 28/03/2024 14:12

People who get glasses online what do you do about adjusting them to fit behind your ears? Because when I pick mine up from specsavers they check that and take them off to the machine which warms the plastic so they can bend the arms in the right place.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 28/03/2024 14:14

Why are "galsses so big""?

Simples. They want you to buy a new pair or two - its called fashion

Just like clothing, short skirts, long skirts, small collars, big collars - its called markets and making one spend money they most likely would not have

EsmaCannonball · 28/03/2024 14:22

I know. I absolutely love my current glasses but need to replace them and I can't find a pair that suits me. They all seem massive and, for some reason, shops seem to think that women want colourful or quirky specs. The pair I wear now are titanium men's glasses that were tweaked to fit me but they are discontinued and every other pair I try on feels very heavy and makes me look like Deidre Barlow's ugly sister.

ManyManyBiscuits · 28/03/2024 14:22

I spent ages this weekend looking for smaller frames on Firmoo - it's not just the size of the lenses but the length of the arms.

The ones I'm wearing that fit well are 130 or 135 mm at the sides (the stats are on the inside of the arm). So I started off with about 40 pairs on firmoo but then filtered by frame size and ended up with about 5, none of which I liked.

The ones I'm wearing are from the teens range at Specsavers so my next approach will have to be looking at online kids ranges and filtering out teenage mutant ninja turtles glasses.

Yep. Optically, they'd very much like us all to be walking around in John Lennons.

Lovemusic82 · 28/03/2024 14:55

I have a small face too and struggle. I find Roxy glasses are small (from spec savers).

I haven't noticed an issue but then I've only ever ordered online. Is there an issue before they bend them?
