Ageism....

CurlewKate · 27/03/2024 15:02

Why do many Mumsnetters seem to think ageism is OK?

OP posts:
Devilsmommy · 27/03/2024 15:05

Because there are many many arseholes on here 😁

clipclop5 · 27/03/2024 15:10

Because an increasing proportion of older people are entitled arseholes, keen to screw the young over in any way they can. The same could be said for the whole country mind you, regardless of age.

Devilsmommy · 27/03/2024 15:15

@clipclop5 way to prove the point there 🤨

HelloMiss · 27/03/2024 15:18

@clipclop5 you are assuming op is talking about older people?

LakeTiticaca · 27/03/2024 16:27

Because they think we are all loaded which in most cases we are not. But if we are comfortable financially it's because we worked hard rather than partied and travelled the world until we were about 35 then complained we couldn't get on the property ladder 😉

pickledandpuzzled · 27/03/2024 16:30

Because criticising someone who is old, or observing patterns of behaviour as people age, isn’t ageism.

Neither is saying an item of clothing looks like something my granny would have worn.

Bluevelvetsofa · 27/03/2024 16:37

Because, if it’s ageism as in criticism of older people, which it generally is, they haven’t grasped that, one day, they will be the older people they complain of now.

They will be the ones slowing down, because that’s just what happens. They will be the ones whose lives are smaller, because that’s what happens. They will be the ones having age related illnesses, because that’s what happens.

When you’re young or middle aged, busy working and raising a family, you can’t comprehend that there will be a time when you’ll be the one being slow in the supermarket, slow walking along the pavement, slow paying for things. But it will happen and those entitled arseholes who are so critical will be in the same position as those they castigate now.

I don’t know of anyone who is keen to screw over young people. I know of older people who have supported the younger members of their family in many different ways and I know of middle aged and young people who are critical of the youth that lacks resilience and believes themselves to be entitled to special treatment.

@pickledandpuzzled "Because criticising someone who is old, or observing patterns of behaviour as people age, isn’t ageism."

Isn't it? What is ageism, then?

Yes! That's my life plan, to screw over the young in any way I can. I'm going to buy all the lattes and avocado toast and all the properties and take all the good jobs so the young folk are screwed!!

Seriously though, what does that even mean? Keen to screw over the young? In what parallel universe do you live clippyclop??

I wonder how many older people that poster actually knows as opposed to 'have read on SM what arseholes they are, screwing the young over.'

Criticising someone because they are old, I’d have thought.

Not at all the same as criticising someone who is old. The elderly can be as awkward and cussed as anyone else.

CurlewKate · 27/03/2024 18:35

@pickledandpuzzled "The elderly can be as awkward and cussed as anyone else."

Of course they can. But on mumsnet, if someone is described as elderly (which usually seems to mean over 50) they are automatically considered in the wrong, awkward and cussed. And it's because they are elderly (aka over 50), not because they might actually have a point.

pickledandpuzzled · 27/03/2024 19:41

Generally people are making posts about people who are behaving badly. On the whole, we agree they are likely to be behaving badly at least from the perspective we are shown. It’s not because of their age.

Again, the elderly parents threads are made when something difficult is happening.

Maybe because they literally refer to older people in their post? Ageism is shit in all forms.

There are some awful older people and awful younger people. Their age doesn't come into it, some people are just cunts.

CroftonWillow · 27/03/2024 19:45

There's a lot of bitter and juvenile people on the internet. Like any other ism anyone expressing these views is not worth a thought. Just move along.

Caththegreat · 18/04/2024 09:32

You dont have to have a slower life.just cos society says so

Caththegreat · 18/04/2024 09:32

Older adults.dont use elderly

albaalba351 · 18/04/2024 10:21

Lots of people believe that Boomers and their economic mismanagement have stolen the lives and futures of young people. This mindset was already huge post-2008, (the anti-boomer sentiment was definitely there)... but now with Covid (forcing young healthy people to sacrifice their lives for over a year, with very little thanks) and Cost of Living - which is extremely negatively impacting young people, that feeling has grown.

There are a lot of frustrations about rent prices, being unable to get on the housing ladder, lack of job prospects etc. and these are largely caused by an older generation rattling about in large houses (that they don't need) and getting a pension from renting to young people that can't get on the housing ladder. It isn't only the older generations that have caused this - the Government also has, with a host of bad anti-young policies - but young people are fed up!

Not in ops original post she doesn't. Yet the first few posts did, which rather proves the point.

Caththegreat · 25/06/2024 17:22

Yes it is.its stereotyping people and not seeing their differences.
