Help me find this noise

There’s a noise in my house that my partner can’t hear. He’s insisting I’ve just got tinitus but I don’t think it’s that. The noise is hard to describe but maybe sounds like when you run a wet finger on glass to try and make a note.

I’ve had this scenario before but a higher pitched sound where it was a faulty plug but I can’t find it this time. I hear it more in evenings and I hear it both upstairs and downstairs. It’s not constant. I don’t hear it outside of home which is why I’m not convinced it’s tinnitus. It’s quite quiet . I sometimes get tinnitus but it’s a totally different sound to me.

it’s a small house. I suspect it’ll be electrical. Could it even be the boiler?

im autistic and it’s making me miserable. If it is tinnitus I don’t know what I can do to not go mad. I’ve been hearing it for hours at a time for about a week now.

is there anything other than plugs or lights to check?

Have you checked the fridge? Mine buzzes and makes weird noises it's so annoying!

I have one of those alarm
clocks that charges phones and it does this.

Boiler/pump and pipes.

If it was boiler would it just be when heating /hot water was running or constant? It’s a combi in the attic and the attic is very spidery so always trying to avoid it where I can…

Could it be the Freezer? Mine makes a weird "rubbery" noise sometimes when it wants to be defrosted.

Minikievs · 27/03/2024 07:43

My fridge freezer crackles and pops. Do you have an ice maker or water filter in it?

Mindymomo · 27/03/2024 07:44

We get a whiney noise coming from the loft, DH says it’s the water pipes.

aodirjjd · 27/03/2024 07:45

No we have a cheap and old under counter fridge and freezer set. I had dismissed them as potential because I hadn’t noticed it being louder in kitchen and they are faffy to pull out but think I will give this a go now. Will definitely invest if it’s that !

My kids could hear when a particular CFL lightbulb was on. I couldn't. Could you try turning off lamps/lights in your home and turning them on individually to see if it might be a light?

SharedAccountWithMySister · 27/03/2024 10:42

When you next hear it, switch off either the upstairs or downstairs sockets at the fuse box.

Then listen to see if you can still hear it, reverse the switches and test again.

Snazzysausage · 27/03/2024 10:44

Women can hear higher pitched noises than men apparently so quite possible your oh can't hear it. No help though as to what it is I'm afraid.

As mentioned above, when you hear it, it might be worth switching off each trip switch at a time and see if that helps you limit it to a certain area. Are you in a semi detached house? Could be something on the wall next door.
