As soon as it gets a bit milder the noise starts.....

I know IABU (that's why I'm not posting there) - people are entitled to do as they wish. I am just unfortunate to live near someone who is home all day and as soon as the weather improves they're out with all manner of tools doing stuff in their garden.

Angle grinders, chain saws, shredders, banging, building stuff, working on trees, strimmers......

My garden office is very near their property and obviously isn't as sound proof as my house. I can work in the house but I like to separate home and work and my set up isn't ideal in the house.

I am just venting here because I'm on my own and just typing it out is helping me calm down. I've had a couple of other things today which have made me cross so I'm just a bit tense as it is.

Do noise cancelling earphones really work? Maybe I should invest.

Was just coming here to say this!
I work in a ‘busy’ house so bought them for that - but recently took them on holiday as I’d lost my little set of earphones.

Oh my God it was wonderful! Couldn’t hear the screaming brat on the row in front, the three loud as buggery elderly people behind… bliss.
Taking them off to order a drink was horrible though 😅

I have just recently read, can anyone verify, that deaf people have clear expresssions, ie no frown lines, because they cannot hear
for people like me who are noise sensitive, this explains deep anxious furrows

deafness has its own limitations I know this

biedrona · 27/03/2024 10:31

Yes, my balcony looks over several gardens and oh boy...there is always some noise coming from at least one of them. Mower, power tools and shrieking children - gentle parenting in action

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 27/03/2024 10:38

Ours also play loud dance music over the top of all the other racket. Fuckers.

Arent people banned from this sort of thing in Switzerland?

My introduction to Switzerland was being told off within 5 minutes for crossing a road when the red man was lit. No traffic but hey.

So I can believe they both ban and obey. Sounds good but I think I wouldn't fit in enough. Just as well I can't afford it!

enchantedsquirrelwood · 27/03/2024 12:04

I agree OP - the minute the sun comes out someone decides to mow their lawn, and it must be really wet from all the rain so why bother?

And then the screamy kids and the yappy dogs.

Noise pollution is a massive problem in this country.

HesterPrincess · 27/03/2024 12:22

Our charming NDN opposite has put a peloton bike and sound system/tv in his garage. No sound insulation in it AT ALL. And to add to the joy, the other neighbour has got a bike in there too so every night it's one or both of them out there for 45 minutes at a time with booming music blasting (that awful gym style music). IT'S THE COUNTRYSIDE you idiots, get one a real bike. A national cycle route goes through the village.

SilverDrawer · 27/03/2024 12:24

Oh I feel your pain. The important conversation neighbour. The incessant pressure washing. The nights of basketball .. 🙈🙈

We lived in a small town outside Munich, Germany when I was in my thirties and no noise (made by adults) was allowed on Sundays. They took it very seriously.

One of my British colleagues at the time got something like a €500 fine for washing his car (outside his house with a sponge and bucket) on a Sunday.

Bovrilla · 27/03/2024 12:34

We have neighbours with reactive dogs. They bark, and it sets off our dog.

They also have installed the hell that is wind chimes, next to the fence we share. I f*cking hate them. They're out 24/7 365 including in howling gales.

They are not relaxing.

At the back we have shrieky children. My only hope is the eldest is nearly a teen so it'll die down now. Mine never screamed like those two do, it's so piercing.

LittleWeed2 · 27/03/2024 13:03

Partly why we are overweight - leaf blowers, powerhoses, lawnmowers, strimmers.

We have a neighbour like this, every power tool known to man used liberally.

I feel your pain.

Us too. They’re out in the garden or inside banging, drilling, hammering every single fucking weekend. That includes Christmas/ Easter and of course every single bank holiday.

It really fucks us off.

Things that annoy people on this site:
Power tools
Music - either from a speaker or from a live instrument
People talking
Children playing : either their voices or their toys
Vehicles
Chopping logs
Lawn mowers
Dogs barking
Fires - and, by that logic, BBQs as well

What can people do in their gardens? Are gardens to be looked at only and not actually used? People don't condone children playing out on the street but neither can they play in their own gardens so where can they go? Definitely not inside on screens <faints>

Isn't it about extent & consideration?

My children play out in the garden for hours, year round. But if they're noisy they have to come in. They may not bounce balls on the patio for more than a few minutes, and we don't have a trampoline. We like our neighbours!

Neighbours have dogs which bark when they go out in the garden. I don't like the sound at all, but it's perfectly reasonable because they only bark for a short time.

Using power tools seems fine in moderation, but not for hours at a time on a sunny bank holiday or weekend.

We love our firepit, but we use it in the evenings only, less often when it's warm enough that lots of people will be out, and never when neighbours have washing up.

One set of neighbours has parties most weekends in summer. They go indoors by 11pmish, which is fine. I wish they wouldn't play music - I just don't agree with subjecting other people to one's choice of music like that - but it isn't ridiculously loud, so since that's their worst habit as a neighbour, we're quite lucky!

We spend SO long in our garden. Avoiding playing music or screaming or using loud tools for hours doesn't mean you can't make great use of your garden!

I'm with you on some of this... if someone's going to complain about chatting in the garden, they can't be reasoned with!

"Do noise cancelling earphones really work? Maybe I should invest."

On noisy neighbours? Not as well as a 12" subwoofer and a spot of late-night rock/metal/EDM/reggae et al.

This!
Get some really good solid Dub and crank up the bass.

Toomanysquishmallows · 27/03/2024 14:30

I dread the warmer weather , because my neighbours have endless barbecues, which involve huge amounts of shouting at each other and running up and down the metal steps to their upstairs flat .

Oh, yes, the screaming children beside me too- why do people let their children do that?! I was strict cos it’s so annoying

Absolutely agree with you re screaming children.
As for Wind~chimes....can you reach over and quietly cut the ''clapper'' thing off, so just the string is dangling? {they may not notice as much}

They are so inane~sounding and absolutely naff.

They were fashionable about 30 yrs ago- and drove many people dotty.

Why wind chimes are the UK's most hated garden accessory • Karen Kingston

Feng shui consultants sometimes recommend wind chimes as "cures" for various problems in a home. Here’s why I’ve never recommended them to any client I’ve worked with and never will.

Got those light little one with wheels not those solid as shit old petrol things that take two people to lift and a strong af person to push…. Or chase after pulling back so it doesn’t smash though someone’s fence.

Not me angrily eyeing up the two in my lodge the dh wants to fix oh no 😣

OutOfTheHouse · 27/03/2024 17:49

I have friends who moved house because the neighbour was constant doing DIY and it pissed them off. They have music blaring all summer. No sense of irony.

Spectre8 · 27/03/2024 18:30

I have decided thus yr I'm am out of my house until at least 8pm when the kids will the be sleeping and some new neighbours who think playing radio every night is okay.

So I got myself an English heritage pass and I'll be making the most of on weekends and during weekdays it's gonna be motivation to go the gym and work out and then I can come home to peace.

My neighbour listens to audio books for hours I just wish he would get some headphones.
