As soon as it gets a bit milder the noise starts.....

I know IABU (that's why I'm not posting there) - people are entitled to do as they wish. I am just unfortunate to live near someone who is home all day and as soon as the weather improves they're out with all manner of tools doing stuff in their garden.

Angle grinders, chain saws, shredders, banging, building stuff, working on trees, strimmers......

My garden office is very near their property and obviously isn't as sound proof as my house. I can work in the house but I like to separate home and work and my set up isn't ideal in the house.

I am just venting here because I'm on my own and just typing it out is helping me calm down. I've had a couple of other things today which have made me cross so I'm just a bit tense as it is.

Do noise cancelling earphones really work? Maybe I should invest.

Get yourself some Bose noise cancelling headphones, play music through them they are brilliant but around £300.

Give me machinery over the sound of children screaming or shrieking any day.

Noise cancelling ear buds are great

Agree. One of our neighbours is retired and spends a lot of time drilling, hammering, power washing etc. I find it weirdly enjoyable. Next door, with the basketball hoop, football net, terrible taste in music that everyone apparentlymust hear, screeching kids who are old enough not to screech...not so much.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/03/2024 16:50

It’s logs round here. Cutting up fucking logs.

user1471538283 · 26/03/2024 16:50

I'm so happy I've moved. We get a fair bit of leaf blowing, lawn mowing and power tools but I'd take that over 12 hours in a hot tub with music so loud I could hear it inside my house and the other neighbour screaming over nothing twice a week from 3am.

At least in the summer evenings I can sit outside.

HappiestSleeping · 26/03/2024 16:55

Very sorry @CharlotteBog, but I confess o will happily swap the rain for you having a bit of noise 😉

Seriously, hopefully your neighbour is only catching up with some overdue jobs. I know I need to.

I started a thread on Sunday about the horrific thump thump thump of the ball as soon as the sun comes out and was flamed for being a misery and told to “move to the countryside” (wouldn’t that be nice). Feral kids kicking a ball unsupervised and pulling panels off a neighbours fence. One poster told me to ring the police. Thing is, these are primary aged kids. I can only dream of the noise of a power tool/jet washer/leaf blower. At least those are useful activities but point taken it’s selfish, thoughtless and annoying. We all have our own problems with noise x

Malarandras · 26/03/2024 16:57

I live in a street full of these people. I have just learned to completely ignore it. Or wear headphones.

justonemoreuser · 26/03/2024 16:58

They're most effective at steady sounds - continuously running lawnmower etc.
Not effective at unpredictable things like hitting something with a hammer.
To most effectively mask the remaining sounds, you need to be playing music through them also.

Depends if you think you'll be comfortable wearing headphones for as many hours as necessary. You could soundproof the shed and play music inside it for a similar effect, but it'll be more expensive and time-consuming than buying headphones!

ChoccieEgg49 · 26/03/2024 17:03

We actually moved house because of this (not the only factor - but played a big part!)
Our neighbours had huge grounds and gardeners in every week. They they were strimming, sawing and mowing. Literally from 8am-4pm and was soooo loud. DH occasionally had Friday's off during Spring and Summer but we could never sit out and enjoy our garden or relax/listen to music. It was deafening. He would get huffy and storm inside 😂 people are entitled to do outside jobs obviously but it's only fair to give some neighbourly consideration and keep it to a minimum.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
The kid playing piano must have really long arms.

Patrickiscrazy · 26/03/2024 17:04

Yes, OP, exactly.
I hate spring. Always have done. Not only because of these reasons.
I hope that one day, when I live on my own again, back in my country and in an apartment, I might start warming up to spring.
Pun intended. 😁

I really wish I could just switch off. It’s so stressful

hendoop · 26/03/2024 17:04

It's the screaming and shrieking- just goes right through me, my kids never did it so I have not learned how to ignore it / tune it out.

When I moved to the countryside it was partly due to the fact I can't stand noisy neighbours, so I traded the coffee shop, small village life for being in the sticks.

Crap WiFi, no bus routes but also peace and zero trick a treaters

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 26/03/2024 17:07

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow Yep. Very similar here. Could scream

Bobbotgegrinch · 26/03/2024 17:09

I love it, even the power tools, lawn mowers etc. Its the sound of summer coming.

Definately beats the sound of pouring rain (although I love that too when I'm all tucked up cosy in bed!)

Chocolate dipped sprouts usually cure the trick or treaters 👍

You can’t - the people on the other end of my calls were getting interference!!

hobocock · 26/03/2024 17:26

Yeah, I knew spring had arrived around here when chainsaw twat started revving up his chainsaw for no reason. He was standing next to his car making a noise with the chainsaw, not actually doing anything with it. So no doubt he'll start sawing up logs 8 hours a day for the next 4 weeks.

He has some kind of job where he's out for 4-5 hours a night. He leaves at 3 am. Every fucking morning at 3 am he lets his car engine run for 15 minutes or so, then he starts revving the car, and eventually leaves, having woken up half the neighbourhood.

Caffeineislife · 26/03/2024 17:32

I understand the noise. It's been hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, pressure washers, strimmers, motorbike ticking over, classic car ticking over all day here. As soon as it's sunny it all starts. Half the road is retired and so as soon as it's dry it's outside garden jobs on repeat every 3 days. 1 neighbour has stripes in his grass that are maintained on a 3 day schedule from March to October. The old man down the road trims his box hedge within an inch of its life. As soon as a bit of the hedge grows, it's hedge trimmer time. The fella across the road must own shares in a water company as his entire driveway and back patio are jet washed every week. Another one has a classic car and spends hours a day tinkering and revving it. One of the people behind us bought his son a motorbike the other year and it's constantly ticking over now. Then there is the street nobhead who I'm convinced trails the local area for rubbish as every few days there is a fire in his gardeb. Plus all the dogs who bark and set one another off for hours on end. Oh and nosey Dave with his bloody drone that he flies around for hours and hours on end it it's nice weather.

Someone around us has started some kind of DIY by the sounds of it as it's been banging all day too. Next week if it's sunny all the kids and grandkids on our estate will be out too so it will be trampolines, football thudding and children playing noise plus all the retired folk doing their mowing, jet washing, hedge trimming and car revving. It's part of home life.

Homes are very much for living in. WFH is a luxury and part of working from home is the noises of home. We cannot all live in deathly silence just because Susan 3 doors down doesn't want to go to the office.

awitchoftroubleinelectricblue · 26/03/2024 17:37

Things that annoy people on this site:
Power tools
Music - either from a speaker or from a live instrument
People talking
Children playing : either their voices or their toys
Vehicles
Chopping logs
Lawn mowers
Dogs barking
Fires - and, by that logic, BBQs as well

What can people do in their gardens? Are gardens to be looked at only and not actually used? People don't condone children playing out on the street but neither can they play in their own gardens so where can they go? Definitely not inside on screens <faints>

I think it's more the constant noise

Do I object to jet washing? No. I do object to my neighbour who will be out there for 3 hours, even in the middle of a storm with either a jet wash or a leaf blower

Children playing no issue. Children screaming all bloody day? STFU because I want to be able to open my windows in summer

Occasional dog barking is normal. Dog barking from 9pm - 4am like one near me? No

Repeat that nearly every day and that's why people get driven mad. My garden isn't usable because of the next door neighbours children screaming all summer

MrsMurphyIWish · 26/03/2024 17:50

I love this time of year! Not so hot you are sweltering but mild enough to be out in the garden! It's the Easter hols, there's bound to be more noise. I've been out all day in my front and back garden -yes, jet washing, stimming etc - and my kids have been earning pocket money doing it too. I'm a teacher so my neighbours get most of the year in silence but I won't be silent in my holidays. My garden will be a jungle!

Lifeinlists · 26/03/2024 17:55

ND neighbour is in love with his leaf blower and sends everything into the road. They've got a green bin fgs!

Next to them is an old fashioned petrol lawn mower. First time he heard it DH thought it was a helicopter. It's that loud! Said neighbour will spend 15 minutes chugging round. Then stop for another 15 minutes. Then start again etc etc. Can take 3+ hours.

Someone is always having building work round here so angle grinders. Joy. Plus there's a very squeaky swing somewhere and I'm donning my Miss Marple hat to find out where.

With you all the way OP.

Lambsarehere · 26/03/2024 18:23

We have one too, every sunny day is ruined by incessant noise. It drives me mad. He has just died, sadly, but I will be relieved not to have the endless noise this summer.

TinyTeachr · 26/03/2024 18:33

My neighbour revs his leafblower. I have no idea why. I wouldn't mind if it was a constant noise. He came and knocked to say he has done my front lawn for me. I thunk I was supposed to be really grateful.... he had woken my 2 year old twins by just coming into our front garden and revving repeatedly under their window.
