As soon as it gets a bit milder the noise starts.....

I know IABU (that's why I'm not posting there) - people are entitled to do as they wish. I am just unfortunate to live near someone who is home all day and as soon as the weather improves they're out with all manner of tools doing stuff in their garden.

Angle grinders, chain saws, shredders, banging, building stuff, working on trees, strimmers......

My garden office is very near their property and obviously isn't as sound proof as my house. I can work in the house but I like to separate home and work and my set up isn't ideal in the house.

I am just venting here because I'm on my own and just typing it out is helping me calm down. I've had a couple of other things today which have made me cross so I'm just a bit tense as it is.

Do noise cancelling earphones really work? Maybe I should invest.

We live in the sticks and it's quiet but our internet is shite- so it's a balance lol

Same! No broadband so wfh is a bit hit and miss which is great fun. But no people!!!

Nevermindtheteacaps · 26/03/2024 15:17

We just sound proofed our garden office.....

What was the approximate cost, if you don't mind me asking?

Spectre8 · 26/03/2024 18:41

I have noise neighbours s who talk so loud I hear word for word what they are talking about at the furtherest point in my house and over the tv.

I now play white noise in the rooms next to their party wall now and it's bliss!

Especially in the morning when I wake up
and im in the bathroom I don't give a flying duck what ur having for breakfast so I stick the white noise on and I hear nothing. I have my peace back!

Appreciate you can't play white noise if ur having a meeting but if your not try it

Hartley99 · 26/03/2024 18:50

I know exactly what you mean. The UK is so crowded that noise is now a major issue. It's especially awful on new estates, where developers jam as many little houses on top of another as they can. If it was up to me, noise pollution would be a serious offence. It ruins lives. It really does. In my life, I have known two people who were driven to suicide attempts by noisy, anti-social neighbours.

The thing that really torments me is cars. When it gets warmer, I have the windows open, and all I can hear is the screeching of souped up car engines and the banging and backfiring of exhausts. I don't know what those little idiots do to their cars, but I know it's illegal. Too many people – simple as that.

tattygrl · 26/03/2024 18:55

I was prepared to defend the happy, comforting noises of people hanging out outdoors, children playing, all that stuff, but NO I COMPLETELY agree - the incessant loud, arguably unnecessary "jobs" that start as soon as it gets above one degree are obnoxious. Fair enough, the odd bit of drilling and sawing might need to get done sometimes, but it's when it goes on for HOURS! Can these people not hear the noise it's making? After they've been at it for an hour do they not think "hmm this is massively unpleasant"?

flightless55 · 26/03/2024 18:55

For us it's our neighbours music blasting and weed smoking :( can't let kids play in garden or get any peace

I wish it was just garden noises to contend with

Having to keep all the windows shut all year is suffocating :(

NoCloudsAllowed · 26/03/2024 18:56

I see what you're saying, but I think the WFH phenomenon has made people have unreasonable expectations that residential areas will be quiet enough for them to work undisturbed.

That's not what homes are for.

Sage7 · 26/03/2024 18:57

CharlotteBog · 26/03/2024 15:19

Well that isn't particularly conducive towards a good days work!

Misses point 😉

I agree with this. People using their houses and gardens for normal living purposes shouldn't be stopped or classed as a nuisance because some people want to work at home.

Yes, noisy neighbours are annoying (I lived in a flat with those downstairs playing music so loud that I could feel the vibrations) but most of the things people describe on here is just the sound of normal living.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 26/03/2024 19:05

Get some Loops they are awesome.
Tbh if its just tools...... Id be grateful - at least hes doing something productive and useful - music, people shouting/larking about, kids shrieking/shouting/screaming Ive no objection to people chatting or kids playing - its the shouting and screaming I cant bear) - would be far more annoying to me.

EndlesslyDistracted · 26/03/2024 19:09

We have one who does metalworking and the noise does set my teeth on edge, it was worse during lockdown when I had to WFH, it was one of the many reasons I was very glad to go back to the office. I still hear him at weekends and on my day off but it’s his job, so I don’t mind really.

IwishMaxTheriothadanOnlyfans · 26/03/2024 19:09

This is why I live in the countryside surrounded by fields - the mooing of cows can be annoying at times, ditto the chickens fussing but rather that than bloody neighbours!

FWIW I've been WFH for years, it's not a new phenomenon for me.
I also said I was just coming here to vent.

I said putting on sub woofer and what have you wasn't conducive towards work. How is that missing the point?

Yes noise cancelling headphones do work .I found myself dreading the screaming of 2 young kids, a dog that barked anytime there was a noise and a mum screaming at them all to get outside .
I really didn't like the grumpy old woman I became but it never stopped .
Good luck

OutOfTheHouse · 26/03/2024 20:07

I’ll swap DIY noise for music any day of the week.

OooScotland · 26/03/2024 20:13

My nearest neighbour is about a mile away but we used to have one who’s 17 year old practised his bagpipes for the school pipe band in his bedroom.

Which is part of the explanation for why our nearest neighbour is now about a mile away.

Persephonegoddess · 27/03/2024 08:15

I agree with @Caffeineislife and @NoCloudsAllowed, if you want to work from home that does not trump other people right to make noise get house jobs done during normal waking hours. You may have worked from home for years but your work is not more important than anything anyone else wants to do. So buy some headphones and get over it, it is a you problem.

Indeed. I was simply coming on to have a vent - as is clear in my OP.

You have my sympathy. We've got an adult bloke & his mum who sit outside once the light nights are here, he's got a really thick sounding droning voice; "Alexa! Play Me & Mrs Jones", and they're off, singing in unison, for a couple of bars, then he gets bored and "Alexa! Play something else" and on & on. Luckily they're at the back of the house and I can only hear them from the bathroom, but it's still annoying. Then there's the screaming kids at the back of us, and the woman who likes to share whatever music she's listening to with the neighbourhood 🙄

Get yourself some Bose noise cancelling headphones, play music through them they are brilliant but around £300.

Was just coming here to say this!
I work in a ‘busy’ house so bought them for that - but recently took them on holiday as I’d lost my little set of earphones.

Oh my God it was wonderful! Couldn’t hear the screaming brat on the row in front, the three loud as buggery elderly people behind… bliss.
Taking them off to order a drink was horrible though 😅

I wonder if I can get my boss to approve a claim as a work expense!

I’m old fashioned enough to believe Sunday is a day of rest, traditionally,
that it’s unneighbourly and ill mannered to be using power tools Sunday pm
when immediate neighbours have family around for tea in le jardin.

Arent people banned from this sort of thing in Switzerland?
