Wordle - is it cheating to look at previous answers?

Was talking to a friend. I told her that after the first word I make a list of possible words and then look to see if they've been used before, because they're not going to be used again. (The website is called rock paper shotgun). Just wondering if you think this is cheating? Friend thought it was. But there have been over 1000 words used now and so the likelihood of not getting it in six goes seems to be getting higher, despite perfectly good guesses.

Seems a long-winded way of playing Wordle.

However, play in whichever way you prefer!

Well I only ever come up with a few possibles so it doesn't take me long to check them off. If you play every day, how often do you run out of possible? But thanks for not saying I'm a cheat!

Definitely long winded! I know someone who uses two devices - uses guesses on one to not ruin their streak on their "official" game!

I just start with a five letter word that includes the mist commonly used letters. I have only not been able to solve it in 6 goes once.
I don't see the point in living long at a list of previously used words or how that can help

I don’t think it’s in the spirit of the game.

Surely the whole point is to compete against yourself, whilst improving your logic/verbal reasoning skills.

Perhaps you should ask yourself why it’s more important to you to have a ‘win’ than work through the process.

You can’t cheat as you are only ever playing the game with yourself. Do whatever you like. Wordle is a logic puzzle. I’m not sure how the likelihood of not getting it could get higher - it’s only five letters, six guesses no matter what - chances are the same.

If you've got s situation (normally on the 2nd row) where you've got quite a few words that would fit, it will just let you eliminate some of them.

That is definitely cheating - against yourself!

Would spoil the fun for me, but you are only trying to fool yourself I suppose.

You set your own measures of success so you can't cheat yourself.
I like to complete the puzzle as quickly as possible as well as in as few guesses as possible so taking time out to check previous answers wouldn't suit me.

It doesn't affect anyone else so maybe cheating is not the right word, but to me it would take some of the interest and challenge away. I'd rather have a 5 done without the word list than a 3 or 4 done with one.

But let’s say you think the word RIVER would fit, but you check if it’s been an answer and therefore don’t use it - RIVER would have given you useful information to help with your next guess. So it doesn’t seem very logical to me…

But it would if you were weighing up between rider, riser and river for example

@ProfessorInkling true, but if you knew it was SA**Y it would highly useful to know if savvy, saggy, sassy or sally had already come up. It's like having up to an extra 4 guesses for "free".

To me most of the challenge is in beating the game in these situations so I don't see the fun in it.

Why can't they reuse words? Have they ever said they won't?

Yes, I understand the NYT have said that. They also currently don't use past tense, or plurals ending in s. But as words get used up, this may have to change, but they will announce it before they make any changes.

In my experience choosing starting words which cover all the vowels and common consonants without duplication is the best approach. I find this usually means I get it in 4. There are occasions when you have to guess random words to eliminate letters when you have multiple words it could still be and only 2 guesses to go.

Re the past tense thing, they did have RISEN a few days back, so maybe that's changing. I don't read the NYT so wouldn't be up on any changes.

OK I've just looked this up. It says they won't repeat past words, they won't use plurals ending in -es, ( but e.g. FUNGI is a possible) and they do use past tense but not ending in -ed. Hence RISEN being one used. Also it says that some words that wouldn't be solutions will be accepted as guesses. When you've done today's you'll see why I looked it up! 😆
