Uber - newbie with questions

Hi, I've never used Uber and don't generally like to use apps on my phone. Because they run the battery down so fast.

Are they likely to be more expensive on Easter Saturday and Easter Monday? This would be for longer distance jobs at around midday. My local taxi company is charging time and a half on the Monday.

Also a lot of the neighbours don't like to use Uber because they said the cancellation rate is really high, we're smack between two motorways and I heard the job allocation is weird with Uber, they can accept it and then turn it down.

in recent traffic jams someone actually had three Ubers cancel on them in a row because they just didn't fancy the job I guess.

The fare estimator doesn't give me any options to quote for jobs that aren't right now, so I don't know what prices will be like on those days.

So I guess my questions are - what is Easter pricing like and what is reliability like at busy times?

Thank you.

Yes it may well be more expensive. Uber bases price on demand, so it is much more expensive when there is demand - like Friday and Saturday nights.

It will likely be just as expensive as taxi fares. And the drivers can just choose to not pick up the job if they don't want to take it.

Thanks @Asmallwhitedove

Thank you.

I can see if we were doing the job now, it would be almost half the price we've been quoted for the Monday job. But I'm not sure if I want the faff of downloading an app if I'm going to end up with the same price, because Monday surely has got to be a surge?

I don't know maybe as it's mid day it won't be? But yeah reliability is important We will be carrying stuff and that'll be a pain if they just can cancel really easily.

You know you can delete the app after you've used it? Also if they do cancel you just request another one.

GasPanic · 26/03/2024 11:04

I use Bolt.

It is similar to Uber. Will it be more expensive on a holiday ? Probably. After all we all want and deserve extra payment for working on holiday dates.

They quote the price, if you don't like it you don't have to take it.

If you want to actually have something pre-booked that you definitely need to reliably turn up on time I'd book a taxi.

With Uber it works really well if you live in a town or city with lots of them about, and for short journeys.

But if it's a longer journey and you want to book ahead of time I would not personally go for an Uber. It could well be 3x the price when you try to book over Easter weekend if lots of people are trying to book them.

My experience with Uber is mostly good. I got charged a cancellation fee once but it went on my account so I could use it next journey. I guess it depends on your area

Also I doubt whether Uber is too happy with their drivers cancelling stuff willy nilly once they have taken a job. After all they cancel, Uber don't get their commission and the customer gets pissed off. So my guess is their is a limited number of times they can get away with doing stuff like that.

idontlikealdi · 26/03/2024 11:15

You can pre book and the price is displayed. I've just had a look at the app and a 15 minute journey is priced £10 more expensive on easter Monday than it is right now.

Thanks all
@idontlikealdi That's really useful, thanks

Guessing an hour plus journey on the motorway is then going to come out the same as the local cab company so we'll stick with them.
