When did toxic, coercive, gaslighting, manipulative behaviour become the norm for television’s entertainment?

MAFSAU & MAFSUK

Year after year it's the same narrative, toxic, coercive, gaslighting behaviour towards usually the wife.
In past years we have seen the likes of Bryce, Harrison, Brad and now this year Jack.
Since when has inflicting emotional trauma and pain been something of entertainment for television?
Why are the experts allowing such behaviour?
Why has this narrative been ok to glamourise?
