Everyone says Osprey but they are out if my price range currently. Only needed for day hikes, so doesn't need to be massive. Been using an old gelert rucksack but the zip has gone.

Not a hiking brand, but I've a kipling backpack that's about 10 years old. Great size, really sturdy zips and been through the washing machine umpteen times. Still good as new.

I don't like Osprey, they just don't sit properly for me.

We have Vaude ones, in several sizes and shapes.

The cheapest shops are Decathlon and Go Outdoor to find decent priced but good quality items I found. It is worth a trip as not every bag fits each body shape.

Head to your nearest Mountain Warehouse, Go Outdoors or Decathlon and try several different sizes and back types. A 20-30 litre is ideal daypack size, air backs are more comfy and hydration bladder compatible is handy too.

Go to Cotswold Outdoors or Blacks and try some out with the weights they provide.

Like PP, I always use a Kipling backpack as well, bought on Amazon about 6 years ago, they wash well and are comfortable and seem fairly showerproof. Good pockets like all Kipling bags.

Don't forget secondhand, I stalked eBay to get my Osprey Tempest 20 for about £50 IIRC. Lowe Alpine also do good packs. If you are short waisted don't forget to look for a short back/ women's pack.

Rab, and Deuter suit me. But like boots rucksacks are very personal.

Blacks and Cotswold do 15% off with NT membership.
