I have just moved into a new property and while the carpets are in good condition and look nice, they are absolutely filthy. They had 4 dogs, were heavy smokers and had a potty training toddler.
I bought a heavy duty carpet cleaner machine and spent the entire day going over the bedroom carpets. The water is still black 7 cleans per room later. I can’t take much more of it as it’s heavy and hurts my back to use but I feel disgusting knowing how dirty the carpets are.
So if you were me or have been in this position would you rip up the carpets and live with the underlay for the meantime or persevere at cleaning the carpets?

Get someone to come and professionally clean them. My parents did this when they moved it an it made a huge difference

I would get a professional carpet cleaner to come and quote and give you an opinion as to whether the carpets are beyond saving or not.

There are things you should consider regarding your current carpet. First of all, the material of your carpet: some carpets can gather more dust than you possibly could clean out of them. I would wait with throughing away your cleaning machine and thought about finding a proper carpet. I moved in an apartment where everywhere were old carpets and the landlords forbidden me to take them away. They said that the carpets are securing the wooden flooring underneath. But they agreed for me buying new carpets and laying them instead of old ones so I found carpet fitters near me and, described the situation that I need carpets that would be easy to clean. They came, took measures and in the matter of days installed new carperts in my apartment. Best decision ever and I don't have to breath with dust anymore.
