Do you know anyone who’s drastically changed their life?

I’ve watched a couple of Instagram reels or YouTube videos about women who’ve converted to Christianity and now cover their hair after being a typical liberal Western woman or gave up their career to live on a homestead with 6 kids (that was in America) and now obviously the algorithm is giving me loads more. I just wondered how common this kind of big shift is?

I also heard an interview with someone who grew up in a Mormon cult, where the men have multiple wives so he had around 40 sibling or half-siblings altogether. But now he doesn’t live like that anymore.

I suppose the big shift is what attracts people to social media content. “I was vaguely Catholic and now I’m vaguely Quaker” isn’t exactly gripping” is it?!

My auntie joined a religious community when she was 25, she’s still there now nearly 40 years later. She is basically a modern day nun, with vows of poverty, celibacy etc. Before that she was a nurse and had a fiancé. I tried to ask her about it once and she said Jesus called her and she never regretted listening to him.

My nan’s sister was a nun with the black and white habit, etc. I have a photograph of the day she made her final vows and you can see all her sisters watching, you can tell that one of them had been crying her eyes out, the others all look as though they’re at a funeral. I only knew her as an old lady but she always seemed very serene and gentle.

I’m an atheist and don’t understand these decisions at all, I do think it’s interesting though.

That’s so interesting, I find it fascinating as well. How often did you see your auntie, can you visit the convent?
