I sent my CV to a small company (2 people) in the hope they might offer me some work. I tracked it with mailsuite and can see that the email has been opened 8 times over the course of around 10 days. I haven’t had a reply from either person.

I would have expected either they would open it, maybe save the CV and delete the mail, or just delete it outright. Or even read it, maybe come back to it a couple of days later, open and delete it then. But 8 opens?

So, I’m wondering, is there a quirk of the system that would mean it looks like they have opened my email but they haven’t? Perhaps by refreshing the page or something. Because I can’t think of any reason why it would be opened multiple times over different days if they’re not interested (and as there has been no reply, I assume they’re not - it wasn’t for a specific job, so there is no closing date or anything).

Techies of mumsnet, can anyone shed any light?

they weren’t advertising
10 days have passed and not even an acknowledgement

i think you can safely assume not interested and this is perhaps a glitch in the system

If either of their inboxes isn’t very active it might be that every time they open their mailbox it opens the most recent email, one of my inboxes does this so if the same email was the last received for a few days it might look like I’d read it several times. In reality of course i wouldn’t have read it each time it was opened and wouldn’t have purposefully opened it more than once.

Well @TheNewDeer that’s what I’m asking - what possible kind of glitch?

@MolkosTeenageAngst I’m pretty sure their inboxes are in constant use as they are a business and they have a lot of work…but it’s a possibility…

Multiple opens alone is no indication of anything more than a recipient coming back to open your email more than once. However, there are cases where recipient opens seem much higher than expected, or opens are registered within seconds/minutes of each other for the same recipient. The cause can be attributed to a few scenarios:

  1. Many email clients like (Outlook or Apple Mail) have a preview pane as part of the inbox view. If a recipient scrolls over your email in their inbox (even passively), this can trigger an email open notification back to our software. Industry wide opens are tracked by images. When the image is displayed, the email is considered opened. This is controlled by the email client and is not distinguishable from normal opens.

  2. Direct forwards could also be the culprit. If the recipient of your email uses the Forward feature in their email client, the open of the person receiving the forwarded email is tracked back to your original recipient.

  3. There are also instances of virus scanners that preview emails to determine spam.

From a quick search of some tech support sites, hopefully helpful!

@TheNewDeer then why bother replying?

thanks @MonsteraMama, that’s helpful. The scrolling over the email senario seems plausible
