Did you think cous cous was a grain?

Colleague eating one of those mug shot packets at work (in boiling water not straight from the packet!)

I am mad for cous cous and suggested it as a similarly easy option, especially if you bring a salad with some chicken/tuna/feta to add to it. She didn't realise that cous cous just needed boiling water added and thought you had to cook it on a hob. She also thought it was a grain rather than a pasta.

I asked around and about half the people I've asked also thought it was a grain.

Maybe it doesn't feature as much in other people's diets so they didn't realise, but I'm honestly mad for it and think it's superior to other pasta. I eat it about 2 or 3 times a week in different ways as I love how simple it is. But I'd also happily eat it plain with a knob of butter and a little garlic 🤤

People muddle it up with bulgar wheat. It’s pasta. Personally I would say quinoa is vastly superior to both.

DuesToTheDirt · 22/03/2024 20:05

I know it's pasta but I use it as a grain. The texture and taste is more like a grain than a pasta, and I wouldn't use it in the same dishes.

In terms of the taste or nutritional value etc?

I just love the taste and texture of cous cous. Even when it's quite plain. It has to be Moroccan however, I'm not a huge fan of the larger pearl type.

Maybe it's assumed to be a grain because it's so small? I knew it was a type of pasta.

Mum2jenny · 22/03/2024 20:09

Not my thing at all, I prefer actual pasta or rice. Will eat it if I’ve been given it by a friend but I don’t really like it. Much better carbs out there!

Nooo! I never tire of it and honestly can't shovel it in quick enough!

pasta is made from a grain, so cous cous is wheat grains, processed, surely?

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/03/2024 20:11

I didn’t know it was pasta 😁. In fairness I don’t eat it, I eat quinoa a lot though.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2024 20:13

The texture of couscous is the devil's work.

Well, yes. But pasta and cous cous are no more a grain than a pancake is a grain.

I'm just discovering that a lot of people think cous cous is a grain like rice.

I didn’t know it was a pasta. I’ve never really given it much thought to be fair.

Shock

I will not hear anymore of this nonsense

I like cous cous. I think I thought it was a grain. I will continue to enjoy it either way!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/03/2024 20:14

I thought it was a grain the first few times I ate it, not sure when exactly I found out it was pasta as well over a decade ago now. I have come across multiple people who thought it was a grain and didn’t know it’s essentially pasta since knowing myself.

I think about cous cous quite a lot.

I've just polished off a plate with salmon.

I see your quinoa and raise you farro. The grain of emperors (quite literally), and absolutely lush.

SprainedBum · 22/03/2024 20:15

Ive never known anyone so passionate aboyt cous cous, but I'm happy for you

soupfiend · 22/03/2024 20:15

No, I knew it was pasta and I hate the way its portrayed in recipes.

I dont eat pasta/couscous but I do eat bulgar wheat, pearl barley and my new discovery Freeka (not sure how you pronounce that)

I am in love with the stuff

Needmorelego · 22/03/2024 20:15

I assumed it was a grain of some sort.
So I've learned something new today.
I don't really like it. You make it with the boiling water but it goes cold really quickly and I don't like that. I don't like cold pasta either though so wouldn't eat a pasta salad.

WibblyWobblyWeeble · 22/03/2024 20:16

I know, and I really like it.

Yourethebeerthief · 22/03/2024 20:16

@devildeepbluesea

Have just googled farro. Will need to find some, it sounds lovely. I love risotto so this sounds right up my street!

Where is it in supermarkets? Is it with the rice?

Ive always found quinoa to be bitter.
