Pringles

You do know that they qualify as prescription strength drugs?

I buy a can to finish it immediately.

I am sooo ashamed of myself

VivaVivaa · 21/03/2024 21:47

Ooo DH and I were talking about this!

He couldn’t live without cereal or baked beans. I’ll never give up Nutella or the salt and vinegar crisps from coop that are so acidic they make your face feel like it’s turning inside out.

UPFs - Utterly Pointless Fuss

I wouldn't say it is utterly pointless fuss. Wait until a heart attack hits you out of nowhere and you suddenly realise you don't want to die so young. It certainly makes you realise you can't eat crap and live a long life. Anyone of us on here might not make it through the night simply because of the crap we have eaten.

Previousreligion · 21/03/2024 21:54

None really. The more I swap upf for non-upf, the more I am turned off upf. It definitely has changed my tastes dramatically. I used to love loads of it, but now it tastes so artificial. There're very few (no?) upf foods I've had which have been nicer than the non-upf equivalent.

I have found that most upf food does have a non-upf equivalent available, albeit can be a bit of an effort to find compared to getting everything from the local supermarket.

The vegetable oil I use to deep fry my home made chips Grin

But what about chocolate?! I don’t eat it often, but when I do, it’s so delicious!! I don’t think there is a substitute? Same with a cake. I’m not keen on cake, but will bake one for a child’s birthday. I’ve used dates for sweetness, but it makes it quite soggy and I think you need chocolate powder to make it more palatable. I’m not sure how you can completely give up sugar, chocolate, flour, etc. surely in moderation it’s ok?

KateMiskin · 21/03/2024 22:11

I think good quality dark chocolate is not UPF?

Kalevala · 21/03/2024 22:12

Bittermints

CommeIlFaut · 21/03/2024 22:14

Revalatio none of sagar, chocolate or flour is UPF. Fill your boots!

Ooh. I love them. I’m working my way through a box, having one with my decaf coffee after dinner when it’s not a cheese after dinner night.

Alicewinn · 21/03/2024 22:16

Frozen pizza is that a upf?

Ok, I just thought it meant processed food! I’ll crack on!

Well I'm finding it hard to buy supermarket bread that isn't UPF, but I don't really eat it

Love a bit of haribo mind.

Some of the Jason’s range is okay from what I’ve looked at!
It’s not really sandwich bread but we make a lot of our own bread anyway (okay dh and dd do), but the Jason’s looks pretty good from a non UPF point of view, what I buy for toast.

I’m not an evangelist about it, there are definitely UPF stuff in our fridge but there is a big difference between processed and ultra processed.

Often people start threads called “what’s good at M&S/Sainsburys/Insert other supermarket here” - and the responses are largely a high volume of UPFs. Because things like meat, fresh fruit/veg are pretty much unprocessed, or minimally processed Whichever supermarket you go to so it’s largely the same across the board. A carrot is a carrot wherever it’s come from.

We eat as non UPF as possible but previously we just called it home cooking. The healthiest people in my life eat well, balanced diets with proper food. The unhealthiest people eat poorly. It’s not just luck of the draw IN LOTS OF CASES. It’s what you put into your body. (Sample of just my family obviously! I don’t know everyone in the world 😂)

You might not care that your diet may cause things in your body to fail earlier than eating a better diet might lead you to but I’d like to give myself better chance of spending more time with my grandkids while being as mobile as possible so if that means eating well and properly so be it.

RhubarbAndFlustered · 21/03/2024 22:44

Like everything else, UPFs have their place and we will never give them up. And we shouldn't have to. Theres always some new evil. Real Sugar in fizzy pop, plastic straws (now we find that paper ones are in fact worse for the environment!) and the latest is bacteria in our laundry needing dettol laundry detergent so our fresh clothes out of the washing machine are bacteria free and sanitised??? As if they weren't before?
I'll cook fresh meals completely from scratch most days but leave my damn Tesco chicken dippers and MacDonalds alone.

FloatyBoaty · 21/03/2024 22:49

Interestingly (for me. Maybe not the world) I’ve had no UPFs this week for the first time maybe ever, as doing the Fast 800 diet and they’re generally too calorific.

Although I love chocolate, breaded chicken, cake etc etc the thing I’m actually missing is condiments. I bloody love a condiment. Sriracha. Hoisin. Nandos sauces. Burger sauce. I don’t think I can keep them off the menu really. I’d rather be fat and eating killer foods. and have access to a nice dip. Even if I am dipping in bloody carrot sticks.

ShowerEasy · 21/03/2024 22:55

I’m pretty good at avoiding UPF- don’t really eat anything pre-prepared, make my own bread, my own pickles and preserves etc. But you will take my Diet Coke from my cold, dead hand.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 21/03/2024 23:00

Please don’t wreck the thread with sensible, Christ things are miserable enough.

Like a pp I do not want years of dementia, or living in poverty because I’m an average person with average provision for old age. I can’t afford to go out to gastro restaurants, I can’t afford organic food, I’ve worked full time since I was 19, am I allowed no enjoyment?!

UPF white bread ham sandwich with Walkers ready salted and a can of Coke Zero.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/03/2024 23:03

Sausage baps with brown sauce and white bread fish finger sandwiches

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 21/03/2024 23:05

And bacon. God, bacon, my love.

I had a heart attack out of the blue. My cardiologIst said stress pissed all over all the other stuff put together for causing heart attacks. I’d been through a year of workplace bullying and a long-running neighbour issue which got progressively worse.

Sainsbury's flying saucers. They're the best flying saucers since Woolies closed and I order a packet a week with my grocery delivery.

HelenHywater · 22/03/2024 06:14

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard I read that not all bacon is UPF -it can be merely processed which is ok(ish)

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 22/03/2024 06:28

I think balance is the key!

Stop obsessing over mini injections of UPFs in your diet. It’s almost inescapable tbh.

The food processing industry is up to some pretty dark stuff behind the scenes, which contributes NOTHING to our health, and a LOT of money into the shareholders pockets… but shopping on a tight budget is hard.

My UPFs of choice:

Cheesy Whatsits, cheesy footballs and cheesy Doritos. (There’s a theme there).
