Semi smart watch for teen DS that’s not too distracting!

DS’ digital watch has broken. He’s keen for a smart watch to replace it but I don’t think one that does loads is a good idea for multiple reasons.
Can anyone recommend one that receives calls or texts (as he tends to keep his phone on silent) but doesn’t have loads of other apps? Also if the phone is on do not disturb at night (in my room), would notifications still come through?

My son has an amazfit one. He gets notifications on it from his phone and I think it counts his steps. He can download different face for it. There aren’t downloadable apps like the Apple Watch though. He’s had it a year now and I think it’s pretty good?

Also my son just switches his phone off at school and at night. Is there a reason why he just has it on do not disturb?

Thank you. Good point re the do not disturb. I think it’s just the ease of having that set automatically so not having to remember to turn the phone off.
