Which side of the escalator

Hi everyone,

Can someone clear something up for me - are you supposed to go up the escalator on the right or left? And which side are you supposed to stand going down?

It sure what this has to do with the conflict in the Middle East?

To answer your questions, in London at least, you stand on the right and walk on the left.

heldinadream · 21/03/2024 13:30

In London, and probably therefore elsewhere in the UK, you stand still on the right and walk on the left. Makes no difference if you are going up or down. So on the right you are keeping in to the side and staying out of the way of people who are in an extra hurry on the left and walking to add to their speed.

AgentProvocateur · 21/03/2024 13:51

In the Middle East you stand on the right and walk on the left to avoid conflict.

IncompleteSenten · 21/03/2024 13:55

In busy cities there's a rule stand on one side to allow those who want to walk up/down get past. I think it's always stand to your right whichever way you're facing leaving space to the left of you.

I've been reliably informed by DC that escalators are terrible. Only lifts and stairs are acceptable.

Thanks. I was asking about what you’re supposed to do in the UK, but it’s probably the same in most countries?

OP posts:
idontlikealdi · 21/03/2024 14:14

Stand on the right, walk on the left. Same in the Middle East.

Elanj9295 · 21/03/2024 14:16

Oops! Didn’t mean to post under that topic I’ll try and move it.

Perhaps, in that case, ask for it to be moved from the "Conflict in the ME" topic?

Portu · 21/03/2024 14:20

Well there seems to be a consensus and therefore you have solved the conflict in the middle East. Well done OP 👍

Elanj9295 · 21/03/2024 14:20

I’m trying, how do I do that? Sorry for being a doofus

OP posts:
Portu · 21/03/2024 14:21

Personally I'd leave it here. It's nice to have a thread where everyone agrees.

Elanj9295 · 21/03/2024 14:22

Now I want to ask how do I move this thread from ‘Conflict in the Middle East’? I’m really sorry, I don’t know how my question got posted under this topic. Though I’m glad Portu thinks it’s funny.

Sorry to break up the consensus, but In Australia we stand on the left side of the escalator leaving the right side clear for those in a hurry.

Elanj9295 · 21/03/2024 14:38

I’ve asked to have my question moved. Truly mortified.😳

TheFlis · 21/03/2024 14:38

@Elanj9295 You just report your own thread and ask HQ to move it.

LivMumsnet · 21/03/2024 14:40

Hi there, @Elanj9295 - we've now moved your thread over to Chat, as requested. Smile

CowCat · 21/03/2024 14:41

Hi,

please leve this thread where it is! In singapore, it is the opposite. Stand on the left & walk on the right.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 21/03/2024 14:51

Well, that was an interesting five minutes working out the connection between escalators and the ME situation. Slightly disappointed now.

Well doesn't the water go down the drain the wrong way? So no surprises there then!
It's your antipodean contrarian nature! 😂

Yup. One of things that totally messed with my brain when I moved to Sydney having been a Londoner for 20 years. Standing in the right is ingrained in me!

It's the same in NZ. I've decided that it's because we live in the upside down.

mrsplum2015 · 22/03/2024 12:20

I also struggle with this as a commuter in australIa but born and brought up near london:
I have to check myself every morning !
