Yellow box turning right

I was driving in London tonight in the dark and had to turn right at a yellow boxed junction. I ended up having to stop in the box turning right due to oncoming traffic preventing me from turning. Will I get a fine?! :( the highway code suggests it’s ok but god I hate these boxes!

It’s absolutely normal to have to stop in the yellow box if you are turning right, don’t fret.

@minipie ok thank you! I was fretting and doubting myself reading the Highway Code. The yellow boxes terrify me 🤣

You are fine to enter and wait in a yellow box provided your exit is clear. So as soon as the traffic allows you just be able to drive out of the yellow box - there must not be a queue of traffic in the road where you want to go that would stop you from getting out of the yellow box.

Thank you. There was no queue of traffic on the road I was turning onto. I had to wait in the yellow road for oncoming traffic blocking my turn. There was also a motorbike in front of my in the yellow box waiting to turn right too (but I didn’t see him waiting there until I’d entered the box - hope that doesn’t impact anything!)

No that’s fine, if someone is already waiting to turn right you just sit behind them and take your turn when you can ie when there is a decent gap in the oncoming traffic. Often you don’t get a chance till the lights change

That's where you're supposed to sit turning right in circumstances you describe.
Annoying when people sit outside box to turn right and you're stuck behind them trying to go straight on.

Thanks everyone! Panic over. I won’t be driving in a new part of London in the dark again 🤣

There is a yellow box near me at a junction where I need to turn right from a side street onto a main road. However my exit is usually blocked due to traffic lights causing traffic. I have been turning right into the box and waiting in it, as I thought that was allowed (I see now that was wrong!). I am not blocking any other traffic and am actually easing the flow of traffic as am allowing the cars behind me to turn left. I am now wondering how to navigate the junction. If you wait for the lights to change and the traffic to flow, you then can't get out due to traffic coming the other way (that was also previously being held at a red light). I have done this junction many times and it has a camera, but I haven't had a ticket, so they are maybe allowing it as it is helping, not hindering the traffic. Following the ruled correctly will make it very hard to navigate the junction.

Many people don't understand box junctions and think it is a blanket "do not enter unless your exit is clear" which is annoying when turning right and they could quite legally move into the box and allow more traffic to cross the line.

I hate that people don't understand that you can actually enter a box if you're turning right but prevented to turn immediately due to oncoming traffic. I was stuck behind someone at lights a couple of days ago. She was turning right at the lights but refused to move forward and wait in the box to turn right. It's a busy junction so for 3 rounds of the lights changing we didn't move.
