DS17 has crashed his car, then cancelled his insurance help please !!

He only passed a few weeks ago and yesterday was driving home from school and he went into the back of the car in front of him. This was due to someone pulling out on the driver in front and my son braked hard but unfortunately did not stop in time and has bumped the back of the car in front

Luckily no one was hurt and the other driver was reasonable and exchanged numbers and agreed DS (aka me!) would pay for the damage rather than going through insurance . The other chap is going to get a quote for the damage and contact us today to sort

However in his panic my son decided he doesn't want to drive for a while and so went onto his car insurance app and cancelled his own policy 🤦‍♀️ (he has pay as u go with Veygo and it's still insured because I've got my own insurance on the car which you have to have when insured with Veygo)

But now I'm panicking in case the damage is not affordable / the car is a write off and the chap has no choice to go through his insurance. My son now isn't insured - although he was at the time of the accident - so what will happen ?? And it's not like we can just reinstate the insurance as he's now had an accident, Altho not reported

It sounds daft but in all my years driving I've never had an accident and never had to claim so I'm not even sure how it all works !!

Where are you getting that from?

And even if the OP is lying about that for some reason what difference would it make? It wouldn't change the time of the accident or the time that the insurance was cancelled.

op says she gets notifications when insurance cancelled

accident at 1pm

OP at work. DS calls mum roadside.
Without even seeing the car, Op agrees to pay for the full cost of repair without insurance

DS cancelled 3pm without telling OP. if he had, she would have said “don’t!!”. op finds out cancelled only when received notification

ForNaiceHiker · 21/03/2024 07:54

DS called me straight after the accident happened to let me know, he never tried to hide it from me like some posters have suggested. The damage to the front of his car may possibly have given it away somewhat anyway 🙄

but chose not to tell you he was cancelling the insurance 2 hours after the accident!

iloveshetlandponies · 21/03/2024 07:56

ForNaiceHiker · 21/03/2024 07:37

if you’re being honest op…. he didn’t tell you straight after the accident

you only found out when you got an email motivation telling you insurance had been cancelled

😂😂😂

Think whatever you want to think

I really don't have to explain myself to people who are for some strange reasons trying to pick holes in my story

To be clear

DS called me straight after the accident happened to let me know, he never tried to hide it from me like some posters have suggested. The damage to the front of his car may possibly have given it away somewhat anyway 🙄

It wasn't till a few hours later that he cancelled his insurance (I wasn't around as was working) . he also said he (incorrectly) assumed that because it had been arranged to settle outside of the insurance, he would be okay to cancel 😫🤦‍♀️

Anyway Thanks again for the advice it's much appreciated Flowers.

I have heard of this happening frequently. Having accidents and paying out of insurance. I think it's understandable your son that's a young driver thought this would be ok. Yes it wasn't the most sensible thing to do but he is only 17 and I'm sure the accident was frightening and shocked him.

Has the other driver been in contact with you yet? Did your insurance also name your son as a driver?

ForNaiceHiker · 21/03/2024 07:42

In any event
his premiums will now have shot through the roof
because you have to declare accidents or damage even where no claim

Edited

We won't be declaring it 😂 get over it

@Hopebridge

We've now spoken to the other driver and they were very reasonable and lovely

It will piss off some posters I'm sure good but we've come to an arrangement now, and it doesn't involve anyone telling the insurance

So neither party's insurance will go up, happy days 😃

So your son will commit insurance fraud as well? Nice!

so not complying with the terms of veygo that you have to notify of any incident even if no claim

the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree

He was insured at the time of the incident, so he should argue that one.

Also, the did the person who pulled out in front do it unsafely, ie without looking, not giving cars in road time to react. If so, might want to argue they caused the accident due to irresponsible driving.

That’s not how it works. You ALWAYS need to leave a gap big enough to stop if the car in front anchors on.

I braked hard to avoid hitting a dog many years ago and the person behind me who went into my car tried this on - luckily common sense won in that they should have left a bigger gap.

@OkPedro

"I damaged the side of someone's car while I was parking beside them. We agreed to pay outside of the insurance there and then.. what's unusual about that?"

Absolutely nothing wrong with it in the real world , glad you were able to sort it in this way too

However in Mumsnet world where everyone is apparently a paragon of virtue - they both call insurance immediately like good citizens, sort it through insurance and then happily pay extra premiums for god knows how long just because it's the right thing to do

So I've no shame in neither party reporting if we don't have to

not surprised your ds has behaved like he did if his parent goes a middle finger to conditions of insurance

leafybrew · 21/03/2024 08:05

MaloneMeadow · 20/03/2024 08:09

Realistically OP if your son has been stupid enough to cancel his insurance straight after having an accident then he isn’t mature enough to be driving a car, end of

Realistically - that is a really unhelpful comment.

op reread your op

it was you panicking that might be a huge bill or even a right off!!

Maybeicanhelpyou · 21/03/2024 08:07

@iloveshetlandponies good outcome

ForNaiceHiker · 21/03/2024 08:08

how did you know the owner of the other vehicle won’t tell his insurer of the incident but no claim submitted. as per the conditions of his car insurance.

You don’t know. he is not submitting a claim which is different from. notifying his insurer of a no claim incident

Yeah, I always find fraud hilarious, especially the bit that costs the rest of us increased premiums when idiots lie to their insurers, pay lower premiums than are commensurate with their risk and then go on to have further accidents.

the op assumes the owner is going to commit fraud but how the heck would she know if he lodges notification of a no claim incident

she doesn’t

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 21/03/2024 08:09

@Shade17
It's not fraud ffs
Insurers only want it reported within 24 hours so every can get to the other driver quickly to stop them going into expensive credit hire
Nothing happens if you don't report it for months.

Some proper drama queens in this thread.

For the next 5 years when the OP’s son answers “no” to the question about whether he’s had and claims or accidents in the past 5 years he’ll be committing fraud.

@ForNaiceHiker

I did an update upthread

But to make it really, really simple for you . Yesterday morning we didn't know the cost of the damage. And now we do know and between the 3 parties have sorted it

But you carry on getting your knickers in a twist

awesome!

my knickers well and truly untwisted. Then again i’m not having to
a) pay out repairs on a vehicle damaged by my DS who passed his test only a few weeks ago
b) now have a DS with a car sitting outside the house that won’t be used as he’s not insured on it
c) committing insurance fraud by not telling insurer of the incident and will do the same again when comes to renewal and asked if any incident but no claim
and finally
d) despite you quite naturally thinking otherwise… have a blooming sneaky son!!

all the best
