DS17 has crashed his car, then cancelled his insurance help please !!

He only passed a few weeks ago and yesterday was driving home from school and he went into the back of the car in front of him. This was due to someone pulling out on the driver in front and my son braked hard but unfortunately did not stop in time and has bumped the back of the car in front

Luckily no one was hurt and the other driver was reasonable and exchanged numbers and agreed DS (aka me!) would pay for the damage rather than going through insurance . The other chap is going to get a quote for the damage and contact us today to sort

However in his panic my son decided he doesn't want to drive for a while and so went onto his car insurance app and cancelled his own policy 🤦‍♀️ (he has pay as u go with Veygo and it's still insured because I've got my own insurance on the car which you have to have when insured with Veygo)

But now I'm panicking in case the damage is not affordable / the car is a write off and the chap has no choice to go through his insurance. My son now isn't insured - although he was at the time of the accident - so what will happen ?? And it's not like we can just reinstate the insurance as he's now had an accident, Altho not reported

It sounds daft but in all my years driving I've never had an accident and never had to claim so I'm not even sure how it all works !!

If the other person makes a claim then DS will have to pay the full year’s insurance (if he hasn’t paid up front).

All part of growing up.

This

peppermintcrisp · 20/03/2024 15:31

I doubt they will make a claim.

Jk8 · 20/03/2024 15:48

Sorry but why would anybody agree to pay out of pocket for a crash they didn't singularly cause when the whole point of insurance is to cover you for accidents ???????

This sounds dodgy as for fuck for both your son & the other driver to be honest. (Was the other driver actually insured/liscenced ? Was your son 100% sober including not drinking the night before?)

Tell your son theirs absolutely no way your/hes paying for it himself especially if he's not planning in driving for a while so won't have to pay the insurance premiums & also demand the full story of what happened & confirm with the details of the other driver involved.

Make it very very clear you know this is a dodgy story

Newname927 · 20/03/2024 15:52

Don't panic. The accident happened before he cancelled. Call his insurer and talk it through with them.

DSD9472 · 20/03/2024 15:55

Did he take photos at the scene showing the cars/any damage etc?

Dinoswearunderpants · 20/03/2024 16:02

There's normally a 14 day cooling off period so you might get lucky. Call the insurers and explain it was cancelled by mistake.

You also need to inform the insurer of the accident regardless, it's the law. So I strongly suggest getting the policy back in place fast before letting them know.

Won't work. If you go into the back of someone, you are always responsible - because it is up to you to drive with sufficient distance ahead to stop in case of emergency.

Incorrect - there are a couple of scenarios whereby you are NOT responsible but they're very few and far between

If I read your OP correctly, there were two policies on the vehicle?

IKR. Rookie error no 1. Never ever do this people of MN.

Realistically OP if your son has been stupid enough to cancel his insurance straight after having an accident then he isn’t mature enough to be driving a car, end of

Which he realised; that was why he cancelled it…

And clearly didn’t realise the possible consequences of cancelling insurance…

Not 100%. I’ve had two prangs. First was when a car pulled out in front of me without looking. I went into the back but it wasn’t my fault. Handily there were at least 20 eyewitnesses at the time, all keen to back me up. The second time a bus went into the back of me on a roundabout. We split liability.

"This was due to someone pulling out on the driver in front and my son braked hard but unfortunately did not stop in time and has bumped the back of the car in front"
I'm sorry and I say this as someone who has done the same and paid the price - this was not 'unfortunate' but due to him not having enough breaking distance between him and the car infront.

ForNaiceHiker · 20/03/2024 16:55

it frightens me that this person has been in charge of a vehicle.

Thankfully i suspect they won’t be legally allowed in this case for much longer

As an aside OP, how on earth did you get insurance for a 17 year old without a black box, it must have cost thousands! I had a nightmare trying to insure my son - ended up having to use Marmalade where you pay for an block of miles, and have an obligatory black box. I might look into Veygo.

I think all you can do now is wait and hope the other driver gets an affordable quote. How bad was the damage? Presume he took photos?

My son had learner policy with RAC which was £700/ year. When he passed called them and changed policy paying an additional £1400/ year. No black box. I thought this was very reasonsble as friends had been quoted £3.5/4k for new driver insurance.

Don't be so ridiculous, people of all ages and experience have reat end shunts every single day.

No one was hurt, cars can be fixed, if he learns a lesson and keeps back in future thats a good thing

Why would he legally not be allowed to drive?

can you think of one? just one, who cancelled their insurance hours after a claim

i suspect the boy thought that if he cancelled his insurance then he couldn’t be found or the other person able to make a claim

ForNaiceHiker · 20/03/2024 17:40

veygo is very much temporary insurance

was he not planning on regularly driving?

Edited

How recent was this? DD passed in December and we’re paying almost £5k for her first year of insurance..

ForNaiceHiker · 20/03/2024 17:41

Veygo’s t&c

How long do I have to report a car accident to my insurance company? You should get in touch with your insurance provider as soon as possible to report the incident, even if you don’t plan on making a claim. As a general rule you should always report to your insurance within 24 hours.

Jl2014 · 20/03/2024 17:45

Too immature to be in charge of a car. I would take it off him til he grows up a bit/ gets some sense.

This is truly an equal opportunities forum.

The immediate reaction when you crash your car and panic is not to cancel the insurance within the hour. It is to ring parents/police. He obviously thought he had something to gain/hide by doing it
