What Spanish liqueur/spirit I'm struggling to remember

We used to have a bottle of smth very strong. This is key. It was 50%+. We bought it in duty free in Spain (Majorca I think). It was a biggish bottle. A litre perhaps. Dark glass. Tall rather than puffy. I remember the label was yellowish but could be mistaken.
The drink was strong (well 50%), dark, sweet, aromatic.
We used to add it to coffee.

And it is not Kahlua because Kahlua is only 20%. And it was definitely something Spanish.

Please help me remember

Albeit Italian not spanish

SpongeBoobBigPants · 19/03/2024 21:21

Metaxa has a yellow label and can be bought in a tall bottle. Sweet, aromatic and strong (around 40%). It’s actually a Greek brandy-type liqueur but I’ve definitely had it in Spain.

Cantueso Oro?

GrumpySock · 19/03/2024 21:57

My husband thinks the label had a pretty girl in a red/white polka dot dress a la 50s style.
Maybe I should try chat gpt google is of no help with such description

The text on the label was def Spanish. We might have bought it in Gran Canaria though. Those were the two destinations we traveled to

No chat gpt didn't help. 😕

I understand. Given the criteria of being over 50% alcohol and featuring a label with a retro-style illustration of a woman in a polka dot dress, I'm unable to find an exact match within the parameters provided. It's possible that the specific drink you're referring to may be a niche or regional product that is not widely documented. If you have any additional details or if there's anything else I can assist you with, please let me know.

Gah! Im sure I remember this from being a teen in Spain. Drank as a liqueur wick coffee I think.

GrumpySock · 19/03/2024 23:05

No not that one unfortunately

The only one I can think of is Hierbas.

Metaxa is Greek brandy, and I can report that it is awesome when fed to a home-made Christmas cake. Best cake I ever made, that year!

crowgift · 19/03/2024 23:24

Ron Miel
it's a honey rum, some kinds are 20 per cent and others I've seen are 45% +(e.g. the Tres Hombres La Palma Ron y Miel). There are various brands making Ron Miel so you might not find the exact label. I have used it in coffee (and in iced coffee).

HollywoodTease · 19/03/2024 23:31

Was the bottle in red netting?

It's Criollita Spanish rum OP, made by Tunel.

The bottle label has now changed, it's more beige/pink, but I'm 99.9% sure I'm right!

Yes, I just came in to say that the only spirit I have ever come across ( legally) that is more then 40 proof and dark is rum. It could easily have a ‘girl in a dress’ label as it is made in the Caribbean or Spice Islands. I used to buy a50% proof rum in France for making preserved fruit ( still have one in the garage I think).

A similar spirit is used for Rumtopf.

HollywoodTease · 19/03/2024 23:36

We call it Evil Rum in our house. It's 53% but tastes like chocolate.....

IntermittentFarting · 19/03/2024 21:02

Wasn’t Tunel was it?
Can’t remember what it’s like, just that it’s absolutely rank.

Is that the green one? Someone bought me a bottle once. It languished at the back of the cupboard for years until I chucked it out when we moved house. Vile.

HollywoodTease · 19/03/2024 23:52

Tunel is a Balearic brand, not a specific liqueur. The most common Tunel drink is hierbas, which is the sticky green one that sometimes has bits of plant in...

GrumpySock · 19/03/2024 23:56

@HollywoodTease aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!! You are genius!!!! Thank you! Yes it is Criolita!!!!

I'm always amazed by mumsnet power 😍😍😍

Ron Criollita Reserva 3 Años is a sweet rum with a high alcohol content and syrupy notes. In spite of its high alcohol content, the intense sweetness makes it soft and delicate. It is perfect for "Carajillo".

Ahh I know it’s not this Frangelico hazelnut liqueur … but now you’ve got me thinking and I really would like to try this again. Delicious. I had it in New York. It’s made by Italian monks or smth.

You're very welcome OP.

We also discovered it by accident in Palma airport duty free many years ago. We now go back as often as we can afford to stock up!

It's one of my favourite rums 🥃

43ontherocksporfavor · 20/03/2024 06:50

Ah well done!

YogaLite · 20/03/2024 10:05

Does anyone know if it's possible to get Criollita in UK?

KnickerlessParsons · 20/03/2024 13:58

Tia Maria?

GrumpySock · 20/03/2024 23:24

@YogaLite I could not find it here. Perhaps the only option is to ask smb to bring it

YogaLite · 21/03/2024 21:43

Thank you @GrumpySock my friend is currently in Portugal so I hope it's available there. I can't believe I never spotted it when I was in Mallorca.
