L plates not sticking

Hi all- looking for some advice. I'm teaching my son to drive and I've bought two sets of magnetic l pates. Annoyingly they keep coming off. I've cleaned the car and then stuck them on but once again they've come off. I'm aware that you can get points if you don't display them so I'd love some advice please. Any ideas?

Sellotape?

Maybeicanhelpyou · 19/03/2024 19:29

Wipe the car and the plate with a damp cloth, really make sure there’s no air underneath and the edges are sealed down properly

I'd rather avoid anything that may damage the paintwork. Not sure if that would or not

@Maybeicanhelpyou ah I have used a dry cloth but not wiped the plate. I'll try that tomorrow.

Masking tape won’t damage paint

surlycurly · 19/03/2024 19:38

Never thought of masking tape! Thanks all.

We ended up making holes in them and tying them on with string.

surlycurly · 19/03/2024 19:59

@TonTonMacoute that's not a bad idea !

We used the plastic ones which stick on the inside of windows they worked well. The magnetic ones are rubbish one flew off into a hedgerow once whilst driving along.

ThereIsATInWater · 19/03/2024 20:00

Are they completely magnetic or the strip?

We had to get the fully magnetic ones because the others kept flying off.

Plates wouldn't stick to most of my husbands car due to what it was made of. Our back plate did attach near the licence plate but we went through a few as they did come off sometimes.

We got a suction plate that worked on the bonnet. Before we found that, we were blue tacking the L plate on the inside of the windscreen.

The full magnetic ones worked ok on the bonnet of a fiesta but not on the back due to the shape and plastic bits. We put it in a Polly pocket inside the back window to solve that problem.

I bought the fully magnetic ones. They stuck to the back but we've lost two from the front now. I think I'll try sticking them with some kind of tape, short term. Then the suction cup ones may be a good option.

Used velcro tabs on 4 corners, leaving the fluffy side stuck on the bonnet.

Put them in the corners of windows out of the line of sight.
We had magnetic on metallic paint Corsa and they damaged the paint! I claimed against Halfords and they paid for bonnet respray.
