Ovarian scan referral

Over40Overdating · 18/03/2024 14:48

Been having some gynae issues so had a raft of blood tests recently and been referred for more plus a scan on ovaries - I only had the appointment re bloods on Thursday and I’ve already had a letter from the ultrasound clinic to confirm an appointment!

I knew the Dr was eager to get the appointment done but I didn’t expect it to be so fast which has now rattled me from thinking it was as a precautionary measure to there must be something I’ve misunderstood and it’s more serious than I though - this feels like I’m on the 2 week pathway now!

I’m peri meno but off HRT for the last while, have regular periods with bad ovulation pain but no other issues : apparently my testosterone is elevated above the normal range which can be a sign of OC.

Anyone else had this and it turned out to be nothing?! Or at least not serious?!

I've had some unexpected bleeding recently and got blood tests and ultrasound really quickly (the scan day after the referral was made).
I haven't had the results of everything yet but I was also sorrow quickly everything was done.

That should say I was surprised (not sorrow)

@ItWasntMyFault wow! That’s really fast! I expected it to be weeks so the speed has made me worry. Comes to something when an efficient service makes you worry you might have cancer rather than be standard practise!

Hi how did u get on please mine is slightly raised how high is yours

CRE2024 · 06/04/2024 00:24

Ye, although I have had endometriosis for 25 years too. Had a smear test and was told my cervix looked inflamed and was sent to hospital within two weeks. The consultant had a student with her so asked if I'd mind him watching while she biopsied my cervix and did an ultrasound of the whole area. My blood levels were also high for the hormone that could indicate oc. She found a large growth on my left ovary. Had an CT scan and an MRI - was a complex endometrioma. Non- cancerous although left unchecked they can become malignant so I was offered a hysterectomy which happened around 18/20 months after the initial diagnosis. I was also terrified it was OC. But cysts can also cause elevated bloods and are generally much more common than oc.

Notinthemood12 · 06/04/2024 02:39

Who told you high testosterone can be a sign of OC? There is a link with polycystic ovaries and testosterone mainly and also simple cysts, although not for all women.

Notinthemood12 · 06/04/2024 02:41

Have they done ca125 blood test? This is linked to gynae issues

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 06/04/2024 02:52

I’ve been through all of this and it was ovarian cancer. This was ten years ago and I remain cancer free.

It sounds like you are being treated very well @Over40Overdating . Even if your diagnosis turns out to be cancer, all is not lost. I remember thinking I was going to die, yet here I am! Best of luck.

scaredofff · 06/04/2024 03:07

With my mum it was all the same as op,
moved very quickly and tests organised straight away. Unfortunately the results weren't as fast but her experience definitely started off the same as yours. They don't like to hang around with things like this

Over40Overdating · 06/04/2024 15:13

@Bex4567 hello! The scan showed some small cysts and as my T levels are still elevated and getting higher I am being referred to an endocrinologist.

Over40Overdating · 06/04/2024 15:14

@CRE2024 oh wow! Glad your discovery was benign - I hope the hysterectomy recovery went well!

@Manyandyoucanwalkover sorry to hear your experience was cancer but very glad you are here to share your experience! Cancer has been ruled out - the GP did confirm she had referred me under the suspected cancer / 2 week rule - but as my levels are still elevated and there are small cysts I have been referred to an endocrinologist. Middle age is the gift that keeps giving!

@scaredofff I hope your mum is ok? I am very glad I was seen so quickly and that they ruled cancer out without leaving me hanging. Still investigating what is causing the level to be askew but there isn’t the same urgency which is reassuring.

@Notinthemood12 my GP did. Which is why she referred me on the fast track system to scan etc. The Ca125 bloods were done and I have not had the results yet but as the scan didn’t show anything concerning the GP has referred me to an endocrinologist.

Thank you. Unfortunately her results came back that she has ovarian cancer. They removed her ovaries and the tumor but still showed cancer so had a remaining hysterectomy, still shows cancer. She's just had her 5/6 chemo app yesterday

Really pleased your results are ok!! Xx

Over40Overdating · 06/04/2024 16:05

@scaredofff huge hugs to you & your mum & good luck to her with her final chemo!

How did they rule out cancer may I ask? Have they mentioned like andral tumors they can make the levels rise...how high were your t levels

Over40Overdating · 08/04/2024 18:59

@Bex4567 they have ruled out ovarian cancer based on the scan even though I’m waiting for the Ca125 results still.

I think adrenal potential will be looked at by the endocrinologist.

Over40Overdating · 10/04/2024 08:57
