Anyone else ill right now, not covid but feels the same?

Shogunspretzel · 17/03/2024 20:08

I'm feeling unwell with a cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches and headaches. Plus I'm shattered and dozy. This is exactly how I felt with covid but the tests are negative.

I know a few people who've been ill and I'm aware of posts here or on social media where people talk about this dragging on for weeks!! I'm just 4 days in but have absolutely no improvement if anything I'm slightly worse.

Just wondering if anyone else wants to share in my misery and has similar. I'm also wondering if covid tests are still accurate and keep up with new strains?

I think I’ve got the start of this, it came on in the night, didn’t sleep great , just feel bleugh this morning! I really hope it doesn’t go on for weeks. Is everyone else managing to carry on with work?

I have carried on working throughout but it’s been really hard, and I’ve crashed most evenings. I have two preschoolers as well so that probably hasn’t helped my recovery. I do feel much, much better on the days I get to rest.

fatphalange · 18/03/2024 09:27

Me and the kids have got it. Luckily they aren't as badly affected as I am. For them it's 'just' a nuisance cough (that doesn't seem to go away).
The heartburn that's come with it is so bad it's making me sick. I was almost in tears last night as the persistent headache bit is making me so miserable.

Abhannmor · 18/03/2024 09:42

TW - mucus. I've read that if you are coughing up clear or white gunge it is most likely viral , green or yellow is bacterial. Trouble is most many GPs will say ' it's probably a virus, take painkillers and drink fluids'.

Short of having a mad fit of coughing in the doctors office you can't convince them otherwise. And besides by the time one is well enough to visit a GP what's the point?

@SaveMyArchitrave I've had a chest infection diagnosis, though funnily enough the ear and throat pain is worse than the cough!

@Cloud44 Yeah, honey and lemon definitely doesn't help! I thought I had tonsillitis due to how sore my throat was, however had that ruled out at the doctors because there were no white bits on my tonsils, they were just enlarged and red.
I haven't managed to work, but I'm also pregnant and can't stop being sick, unsure if that's the infection, the coughing or the pregnancy!

I am feeling the tiniest bit better today, my cold started Thursday, then this horrificness on Monday. Hope everyone else is feeling the tiniest bit better too x

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/03/2024 09:45

I don't have it but my son has been coughing for weeks. At first I didn't really notice because he is always full of germs but now he is coughing through the night, and I notice he is eating less. He doesn't complain of any of it but he definitely isn't throwing it off as quickly as he normally does.

mrsbyers · 18/03/2024 09:46

Into 5th week here

Tessiebeare · 18/03/2024 09:47

Yes I’ve had this for the last fortnight. It rubbish as i have a newborn so not getting an awful lot of sleep anyway but then me coughing half the night wakes him up so even less sleep is had.
Also testing negative on LFT but can’t help but wonder if LFTs work any more anyway as it was a couple of years ago now they were developed and the strains will be totally different now it’s just that we are hearing about it in the news so much less these days.

PussInBin20 · 18/03/2024 11:12

I tested positive on Friday OP and have the same symptoms as you. I expect you will test positive eventually.

I am a bit surprised that I got it again and am wondering if it is laying dormant inside me and it came out when I was a bit run down. 🤷‍♀️

Not sure if that’s possible but it happened this way last time I got it too.

AskNotForWhomTheBellCurves · 18/03/2024 12:10

If it's any reassurance OP, I've had this for a week (well, two and a half weeks, but the first week and a half was just a mild cough and scratchy throat - last Monday was when I got properly ill), and after a few days bedbound, coughing up green gunk with a low fever I'm feeling loads better already. Still coughing horrendously at night, but during the day I'm up and about feeling basically fine, and I'm prone to chest infections so normally can't shake these things off for ages. No antibiotics or inhaler or anything needed either. So fingers crossed yours is also short lived - massive sympathy to anyone who's been struggling with it for weeks or months.

Does anyone think it may have started as tonsilitis with how the throat has felt? I’m guessing the standard honey and lemon doesn’t really help? Really haven’t got time to be poorly!

Yes, I was convinced it was tonsillitis. Then 3-4 days later the cold and cough started and I am near enough bed bound. By tonight, it will be 2 full days in bed. I just don't seem to be getting better. This may be the most Ill I have ever felt.

Shogunspretzel · 18/03/2024 18:05

I'm really pretty fed up with myself now. It's now day 5. Which I know isn't a long time compared to some. But I am freelance and have a slight lul between projects which I'd hoped to use to catch up in stuff and just actually recharge. Also I have adhd and I'm not great at not doing stuff I get pretty anxious and low quite quickly. So yeah sick of myself.

Sorry to everyone else going through this!

My husband has had this for 3 weeks. I started last Wednesday with raging tonsillitis and it’s now moving to my ears and chest.

Was given penicillin, which has done nothing, and just been prescribed clarithromycin today, with review scheduled for Thursday. I’m due a neuro assessment next Tuesday in relation to expected spinal surgery, so they’re keen to get me past this and ensure that there is nothing to stop me attending.

Will let you know if the antibiotics start to work. For now, I’m back off to bed because even slobbing out in a recliner downstairs is too much hard work.

WickWood · 18/03/2024 18:50

@Shogunspretzel Sorry you're feeling so bad, have you been to the doctors?

Cloud44 · 18/03/2024 18:55

Feel horrible today, so cold can’t stop shaking, horrible sore throat, headache and ear ache.

Cloud44 · 18/03/2024 18:56

Tonight I meant !

WickWood · 18/03/2024 18:50

@Shogunspretzel Sorry you're feeling so bad, have you been to the doctors?

I haven't, my partner is going away for work tomorrow and he's fussing about me going!
I feel like they will just tell me it viral etc. I suppose you don't know until you go. But I'm not sure if they can do anything.

It does feel like it's on my chest though. As my cough vibrates my whole chest and I I do bring stuff up. But that could be viral too I guess?

I'm trying to hold off on taking more pain killers until I go to sleep. But my muscles, thighs in particular are so painful it's almost like cramp.

OP posts:
WickWood · 18/03/2024 19:12

@Shogunspretzel What colour is the stuff you're bringing up?
I was told it was viral initially on Friday morning at my doctors, when I went to urgent care Saturday night/Sunday morning I was told it was a chest infection and was given antibiotics and an inhaler. I already feel much better having taken them.
You should definitely go to your GP, it sounds like it's on your chest too!

christmascalypso · 18/03/2024 19:12

Yes on day 7. It started off mildly with sore throat and mild cold. Got worse and I have lost my voice, coughing, have so much snot I am almost vomiting with it and just feel exhausted. Normally I get over things quickly so it's very annoying!

GrumpyInsomniac · 19/03/2024 09:16

@Shogunspretzel definitely talk to the doctor. I switched antibiotics yesterday from penicillin to clarithromycin and after just 2 doses yesterday I’ve woken up this morning and my throat is already feeling a little better, as are my ears and chest. And that's after I retreated to bed yesterday with one ear really blocked and painful and my balance all out of whack.

Suspect I’ll be coughing for a while to clear my chest, but I’m already feeling more human.

Cloud44 · 19/03/2024 09:30

How’s everyone feeling today?

Shogunspretzel · 19/03/2024 12:32

I'm not doing well tbh. I've been to they gp and she said my chest is clear so that's good. But also there's nothing to just fix this!

I'm really fed up and exhausted if I do anything. But also sick of being in bed, and I know if I don't rest it will drag for even longer!

Lovemybunnies · 19/03/2024 20:33

No worse but no better.

Shogunspretzel · 20/03/2024 19:09

I'm just having a bit of a meltdown here. I feel shit and have a big work event tomorrow. It's a nearly a years worth of work being showcased at it and I was a project lead. I'm planning on going and have to deliver some sessions and just feel so shit and unprepared.

Plus I have so much stuff building up and was supposed to have time get in top of it this last week but haven't been able to really do anything. I know people have it souch worse than me with my little moan about my work life balance and how being ill has fucked it. But I'm self employed and it's been really hard and I just feel like this illness has tipped me over.

loz12345 · 20/03/2024 19:20

I have it - been ill about a week and a half started with a really runny nose now have a cough and have not slept properly for about a week because of the congestion and have been in bed for 8 as being sat up is too much effort. I am managing to work just about but I am also studying with an assignment due in just over a week and no idea how I am going to manage it. It is the worse I have felt in a long time and the feeling it is never going to clear isn’t helping- hope everyone feels better soon l.

AlwaysFreezing · 20/03/2024 19:33

We've all had the flu. Diagnosed by swab because dc ended up in hospital with a rash that didn't fade and a temp of 40c.

Its been shit. So much worse than a cold. Dh was vomiting with it and his temperature almost hit 40 too. Me and the other dc have had it, but a bit milder, temps of 38-39, no vomiting, but the aches and the lethargy/exhaustion for all of us has been awful.

Dh stated a week ago and he seems brighter today, just wiped out. We're not far behind him. It will get better. Lots of vitamin c, multivitamins, iron, B12, vit D alongside fluids, regular paracetamol and ibuprofen, the fan on, snoozing, TV and soft food are how we've coped,
