What was the name of the singing group on the Val Doonican show in the 1970s? Men, Aran jumpers, IIRC

I was trying to remember this yesterday and couldn't, and googling hasn't helped. Only other over 60s are likely to remember this. The Val Doonican show was just about the most middle of the road light entertainment show ever. My parents loved it so we watched it every week. He always had guests. One regular was a British or possibly Irish group of middle-aged men (well, they looked that age to me, back in the 1970s when I was in my teens) and they sang folk and similar songs. I think they all wore Aran jumpers, possibly not always. One of them was black or mixed race, IIRC, and the rest were white. Anybody got a name for them?

It's entirely possible I'm misremembering all of this ...

The Spinners?

The Bachelors?

Have a look on BBC iPlayer for episodes. We watched one on Christmas Day dull backstory involving someone sitting in our rocking chair wearing a Xmas jumper

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2024 18:37

The Clancy Brothers?

StopStartStop · 17/03/2024 18:37

Clancys?
That's a wild guess. I didn't watch Val Doonican.

There you go...

The Spinners! Yes, that's the one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spinners_(English_band)

Gosh, this brings back memories of endless evenings in front of the box in our little semi, full of brown and mustard furniture and soft furnishings.

Saturday evening: Generation Game on at teatime. Can't remember what came next - light entertainment show? Later on, Match of the Day, and then Parkinson. We watched all of it. If we were at home and there was anything on, on any of the three available channels (BBC1, BBC2, ITV), the TV was on.

Yes, Val sang. A lot. I am so grateful nothing nasty has come out of the woodwork about him, unlike RH, JS and so many other staples of the light entertainment schedule back then.

Blankety Blank maybe and 321 with dusty bin on the other side?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/03/2024 18:47

Oh yes, Blankety Blank! Before that there were the football results, aimed at people who did the pools weekly, as my parents did. I assume the pools are long gone? We sometimes watched the wrestling on ITV on Saturday afternoons.

I think The Spinners if one was black-the Clancy Brothers if one wasn't.

Aussiegold · 17/03/2024 19:00

Oh gosh, takes me back! One of their daughters was in the year below me in school and I remember her showing off her autograph book!

I am older than I think.....

Ahwig · 17/03/2024 19:07

Dixon of dock green was usually on before the generation game, followed by as poster said light entertainment show, apart from Val Doonican there was also the Cilla Black show.

Whatwillbewilbe · 17/03/2024 19:19

We watched all of the above. I also remember watching The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club and Sunday Night at the London Palladium as well as many others. Memories 🙂

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/03/2024 19:32

Nana Mouskouri , Cilla, Lulu, Dusty Springfield, Rolf Harris, Val Doonican, Andy Williams. There may have been others. Morecambe and Wise were on a higher plane and put in whatever was the primest of prime slots.

That pretty much sums it up.

The Spinners were from Liverpool. Cliff was black and the other three were white.

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, which is how they were billed, were from Southern Ireland, and rocked the Aran sweaters.

All on YouTube.

I’m a bit younger. I remember Blankety blank, very end of Wogan, I don’t think I appreciated Les Dawsons humour. Were you supposed to be able to do anything with the chequebook and pen?

Ted27 · 17/03/2024 19:56

Ahhh Val in his rocking chair

Happy Days,

I hated Val Doonican so much as a small child, especially his Xmas Eve special. It was so boring! My parents bloody loved him. Sorry Val, am sure you are (were?) lovely really.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 17/03/2024 20:00

Was. Died in 2015 at the ripe old age of 88.

Don’t forget Saturday Night at the Movies, Basil Brush, Kojak, Starsky and Hutch, Two Ronnies etc.

I remember The Spinners - we had one of their LPs.
