This is not a cheap area! Your best bet is to stay in Chippenham. There's definitely a Tavellodge there and a Best Western Hotel. There are B&Bs/guest houses too. Castle Combe and Lacock are both around 9 miles (ish) from Chippenham and buses go from there to both villages but not sure how regular these are as obviously they are country services.

Malmesbury (pretty town and central for Tetbury and Castle Coombe)

Corsham - close to both, and again a pretty town
Melksham less pretty but has a travelodge and some nice pubs

Have you tried any farm b&bs?

It’s worth noting that generally the roads are pretty good and travel is easy by car and much faster than eg the south east, so 10 miles will take around 30 minutes.

public transport is rubbish!!

Thank you that's really helpful

Methuen Arms, Corsham but not sure how much they charge though or Quarrymans Arms nearby at Box Hill

Em2ds1dd · 17/03/2024 22:07

Quarrymans is definitely country lanes tho so not great for a nervous driver.
But a fantastic pub!

Chippenham (as previously suggested) is another good idea. The Angel Hotel maybe. Part of the Great Western chain, and an easy drive to the places you want to visit

Beechfield house hotel beanacre (between Chippenham and melksham) is close by for lacock.

yatton keynell is nice and close to castle combe

SquareCrumpets · 17/03/2024 22:56

Stanton Manor is nice. So is Beechfield House. Not cheap, though. Chippenham has a travel lodge and a premier inn. Some of the local pubs do accommodation.

Do not rely on buses. They are infrequent. And they do not run on bank holidays.

@@@Sageyboots @SquareCrumpets

I looked at beechfield house, pool and looks v nice. 310 for family rook I think but mixed reviews. Some say windows don't open enough (we will be there in July), and smell of drain from some rooms...

In other places we can get two rooms for under that price.
(booked up unfortunately)
I found a stunning place called hill top farm by castle Coombe and they are selling up so won't take bookings.

Pickwick Lodge Farm also looked amazing and v good value, a room each but booked up.

Definitely no buses, we are driving and I can't cope with narrow lanes. Definitely don't want a premier inn, not for this trip.
I used to like them for certain circumstances until we once had awful experience with an unmade beds and hair covered topper. @Bumbleby I've seen fhe methuen arms and can't remember rhe issue with it!
Looks fab to eat there though.
