Sanitary towels in nappy aisle

They've re-jigged my local sainsbury's around over the last few months and closed down the pharmacy.
I noticed recently when looking for sanitary towels that they are in the aisle with the nappies and the signage over the aisle just says nappies nothing else. It's a new sign.

I was mildly irritated by this, not sure why, it just doesn't seem to sit right. Surely it should say feminine care or something and should babies nappies and fc go together? Seems a bit odd to me...

Just wondering what others think. I have no plans to complain or start a petition 😉

I bled quite a bit after birth so it would have saved me time getting everything in one aisle lol

Judellie · 17/03/2024 18:56

I think my Tesco definitely have their priorities wrong - the chocolate onlyhas half an aisle now. Alcohol has three aisles!
Ah well, at least there's an Easter aisle at the moment and that is full of lovely chocolate and no horrible alcohol (love chocolate, teetotal. Bet you all worked that one out!)

In my tesco they have split the pet aisle so it is no longer contained on one aisle so non pet owners are have to go down them.
It's disgusting

Disgusting for non pet owners to walk past pet products? Why?

My thoughts exactly....

My local Sainsbury's pretty much has the pet products, laundry detergents and frozen in the same section. I'm still baffled by it.

Pet owners might get used to it. I never will.

This is why I prefer to do groceries online 😅

peervolunteer · 17/03/2024 20:05

I think it's much better to keep the two separate, given that some women needing sanitary towels will have just had a miscarriage or abortion and having to walk down the baby aisle could be very emotional.

Triggered by a nappy 🤔🤔

If you are that easily disgusted by a smell most people don't even notice (dog biscuits?) I don't know how you survive. What about the cheese aisle? People with BO on the bus?

I actually don't have a great sense of smell didn't realise the cheese aisle had a smell (maybe I'm noseblind as I love cheese) But the pet aisles really do have an awful smell.
Guessing you are a pet owner so a bit more used to it.

Don't go in a supermarket in France then.

Our Sainsburys have relabelled Feminine Hygiene and now they're Period Products.

Just in case a masculine person takes offence I assume.

Oganesson118 · 18/03/2024 08:59

I could think of better things to give headspace to. Feels like a non-issue.

pizzaHeart · 18/03/2024 09:04

Could it be the new government trend of promoting more walking around supermarkets looking for things?

Snugglemonkey · 18/03/2024 09:47

My son and I are both sensitive to smells. We do not go into the pet aisle. It usually really smells.

BlackForestCake · 18/03/2024 09:52

The pet food aisle does smell. I wouldn't say disgusting but certainly not very pleasant. I can see why people would rather not go down it.

rooftopbird · 18/03/2024 09:52

Whatever. I think I may have looked for sanitary stuff in the nappy aisle before, who cares.

newnamethanks · 18/03/2024 09:55

Shocking. They should be kept in a locked cabinet only obtainable by providing photo ID and an age check. "are you sure that's what you want Madam? Have you considered our Tena range?"

HoHoHoliday · 18/03/2024 10:03

Historically/linguistically it makes sense! "Napkin" was a piece of cloth used for wiping or absorbing. So we use napkins on a dinner table. We used them around babies bottoms - nappy is short for napkin. And women use them for absorbing periods, some countries still call them napkins whereas others call them towels. Personally I'd rather pick them up alongside my toiletries but I couldn't be offended by finding them next to babies nappies either.

ViaRia01 · 18/03/2024 10:06

Sounds fine to me: the signage is not an exhaustive list… it just helps to guide you in the genre direction. No, nappies are not the same as sanitary towels abut they are in the same ball park - personal care/ bathroom items.

if sanitary towels were under a sign called ‘milk’ or something I’d see you point more.

Sausageplusmash · 18/03/2024 10:19

I can't understand the issue

brytersky · 17/03/2024 13:19

Probably some new male graduate manager who thinks they're the same thing "'cos leakage innit?" 🤦🏻‍♀️

More likely lack of space on shelves in other potentially more suitable areas. They take up a fair amount of space, so would need deeper shelving to display as many as necessary. Comparing with medicines etc isn't helpful as they're usually on much narrower shelves as they're smaller, slower sellers, so you need fewer on display.

As others have said, will probably be moved again in due course, but was almost certainly a short term "fix" as part of a re-arrangement.

So where would you put them that would mean that someone who'd had a miscarriage or abortion couldn't accidentally see them?

If they were in the medicine section, such a person would see them if they were wanting headache tablets or a packet of plasters!

You'd literally have to stick them in the furthest most corner of the store so that no one would have to walk past them and accidentally see them.

What a ridiculous comment. I can easily see why there was another thread over the weekend about the "terminally offended" and another one a few days earlier about being offended on behalf of others! Some people go out of their way to find offense on behalf of other people (most of whom aren't remotely bothered!)

no it's likely disposable sanitary products are all in same aisle. both fall under this

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 18/03/2024 10:41

They are all sanitary items, what's the problem?
