Drinks with senior leadership?

On Friday, there was a leaving do for a young lad who’s worked with the company for 10 years.

Now, I’m quite young myself I’m 28, and I would love to be part of senior leadership some day. My worry is that I do go out to social things I have a drink or two, and I always wonder if they’re judging me while I’m having a drink? Or if they’re generally watching conduct, I hang around with my team who are a little brash and loud.

I just worry if they’d consider all of these things if I was to try and get into SLT?

I think it’s wise to be careful - in many contexts the situation is an extension of the workplace

Go to the social events and be sociable - most senior staff understand if someone has personal reasons not to attend but hope that most will attend
Even if they are not SLT they will be aware of your behaviour- just as you would if you were in a pub and someone at the next table is being lairy/ rude/ drunk / aggressive
They will also be conscious that you are looking at them - friend of mine was the boss, carried a load of drinks to a table to give to staff, one of the staff took a photo and then posted on social
media that the boss was a boozer. As you can imagine this broke the trust with this boss and the staff ( don’t buy drinks again)

Go to the event, be sociable with everyone but if it starts getting loud and out of hand avoid the situation because even if SLT don’t notice your colleagues will and when you are promoted they will recall the drunk fool
who was too loud etc

Hole that helps and one day you will be the SLT hoping the staff are not judging you!

Why post two separate threads ?

I’ve been going out for work drinks since I was a grad. I’m now in the SLT. It’s a great way of socialising with people and getting to know them.

It's fine. Maybe make sure you head off before things get too rowdy if you're worried

I never drink alcohol if I'm with senior leadership (a situation I avoid where I can). If I'm drunk I tend to get the delusion that everyone is my best buddy and it's a great idea to tell them whatever comes into my head. Bad idea!

Just have 1 glass of wine.
The company I work for does a lot socially for its staff, we are very lucky
