Supermarket pasta sauce with no onions ???!!!!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2024 10:28

DS is going on his DoE bronze practice expedition on Monday.
The kids have divied up who is bringing what.

DS has been allocated pasta sauce.
School want shop-brought stuff, I guess for hygiene and allergies etc.

The other stipulation is that it can't contain onions, as one of the lads in the group is allergic to them. Also no nuts - so no pesto.

Please can anyone tell me if any jarred pasta sauce that does not contain onions?!!! I'm struggling here - had a look in co-op last night, and nothing.

We have no other supermarkets locally, but can drive to Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and M&S.

Help!

I think he should swap items with the boy who has the allergies - it would be safer for that child to choose what pasta sauce he can eat!

BettyBootsie · 16/03/2024 10:31

Maybe something creamy rather than a tomato based one? Carbonara or even a cheese sauce for mac & cheese?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2024 10:31

I have asked ds if he knows what pasta sauce this lad unusually has, or if he had a contact number, but he knows none on this.

What about a packet of powdered cheese sauce that they mix up themselves?

BertieBotts · 16/03/2024 10:32

Just a plain passata or tinned chopped tomatoes suffices as a pasta sauce, especially the ones with stuff like basil or garlic in.

I agree with this, surely it’s safest for the person with the allergy to make sure they have something suitable. Could the group leader help to re-coordinate this?

You'd have thought, but ds has no way of contacting the other child, who is not expecting to bring sauce.

Yes I would just go for plain passata if all else fails

these would do the trick, what supermarkets do you have locally? Google “low FODMAP pasta sauce” and the supermarket and you should find something.

But, isn't DoE supposed to be about them being independent? I think you might be better to leave him to it.

NuffSaidSam · 16/03/2024 10:34

I'd go for a cheesy sauce. They're more likely to be onion free.

Or otherwise just chopped tomatoes, the ones with herbs and garlic are relatively tasty and hopefully onion free.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 16/03/2024 10:34

Pesto usually contains pine nuts which aren't actually nuts, although the name would make you think otherwise. Would be worth asking your son to check with the other lad because it might be that pesto is actually fine and it solves your problem :)

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 16/03/2024 10:35

I think you’ll struggle for onion free. One of dds group just had cheese and a few mayo sachets with pasta.

mine took stir thru sauces and cut up long life hot dogs (vacuum packed).
lunch was the same hot dogs (new pack to stop contamination and stench) in a roll with shit loads of ketchup sachets.

dementedpixie · 16/03/2024 10:37

Some Lloyd Grossman sauces don't seem to have onions e.g. the tomato and chilli one

dementedpixie · 16/03/2024 10:39

The tomato and basil Lloyd Grossman sauce also doesn't list onions on the label

That's real pesto but school doesn't want homemade. The commercial stuff uses cheaper substitutes. Hell, they even replace some of the olive oil with rapeseed.

mitogoshi · 16/03/2024 10:46

Plain passata is onion free, take a jar dried of herbs for flavour

Justmemyselfandi999 · 16/03/2024 10:47

Tesco Free From green pesto doesn't contain onions. Tiny jar goes a long way, and will be light to carry. It's really good!

andHelenknowsimmiserablenow · 16/03/2024 10:47

I'm sure Dolmio did a sauce with no onions that I used to buy for DD. Maybe I am just thinking of smooth Dolmio though....

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2024 10:49

Thank you all.
Top tip re: Lloyd Grosman, and hot dogs!

I did know that pine nuts are not real nuts, but school have said "no pesto" and I'd rather not have to argue the case with the teacher whose gone out of her way to organise this.

That's pretty much what I was thinking.!

Obvs anything in a jar needs to be transferred to plastic, but passata comes in tetra packs.

Red pepper type pesto

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 16/03/2024 10:52

I’m surprised the teacher is taking the risk of allowing someone to bring a sauce for someone with an allergy.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 16/03/2024 10:57

I’d just go with a Sacla sundried tomato paste much smaller jar to carry as well

Librarybooker · 16/03/2024 11:02

Tinned chopped tomatoes with herbs in perhaps? There’s a tetrapack one that has oregano, basil and garlic in - Sainsburys I think
