Supermarket pasta sauce with no onions ???!!!!!

DS is going on his DoE bronze practice expedition on Monday.
The kids have divied up who is bringing what.

DS has been allocated pasta sauce.
School want shop-brought stuff, I guess for hygiene and allergies etc.

The other stipulation is that it can't contain onions, as one of the lads in the group is allergic to them. Also no nuts - so no pesto.

Please can anyone tell me if any jarred pasta sauce that does not contain onions?!!! I'm struggling here - had a look in co-op last night, and nothing.

We have no other supermarkets locally, but can drive to Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and M&S.

Help!

Er... @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I've just had a thought. Garlic is a member of the onion family, so you probably need to avoid that as well.

SheepAndSword · 16/03/2024 14:15

Tbh when I did DofE you'll eat anything in the fresh air and water is like the Amber nectar so passata in a carton and herbs will be fine

Dolmio creamy tomato and Carbonara packets don’t have onions in. I cannot stand onions!

the jars might but the packets definitely don’t.

It's got the dreaded garlic powder in, unfortunately.

So has the Asda Essentials bolognese sauce linked to by a pp.

It's an absolute ballache for those why need to avoid the whole of the onion family.

Ages ago now but DS took ringpull cans of tuna in oil and sweetcorn. Said it was ok if it wasn't hot that way!

Lloyd Grossman pasta sauce in the jars has no onions last time I checked.

He should be working this out, not you.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/03/2024 15:40

No onion listed here

He's a child. This is something that needs adult intervention.

JMSA · 16/03/2024 15:44

Not sure if it contains onions, but (Heinz) cream of tomato soup could work.

What a misery.

As someone who is also allergic to onions, I also struggle with things like garlic and some herbs. Passata would be my recommendation, a vegetable Oxo cube is quite nice with it too.

KnickerlessParsons · 16/03/2024 15:53

Pine nuts (in pesto) aren't actually nuts are they? Aren't they seeds?

Sammilouwho · 16/03/2024 15:54

Also, everybody recommending the Lloyd Grossman ones, I'd check if the child can have it because I can't tolerate them at all nor anything containing peppers.
If you're not sure on a tomato based sauce go cheese based!

Allfortheloveofabiscuit · 16/03/2024 15:57

Put the tetra pack in a tupperware box to savehaving to decant it, then he can take any leftovers for lunch thr next day too

I would ask DC to get contact details for the child with allergies from the organiser. If the child has a serious allergy to onions I'm surprised he's not bringing his own food and then everyone else can eat what they like.

Pastachocolate · 16/03/2024 16:20

This seems crazy and quite a risk whether another child doing their DoE or their parent. I would have been careful but with no experience of allergies would not have known about the garlic link. Even if the allergy is currently mild it can on occasion be more serious. Also even a mild reaction will be horrible for everyone- the person with the allergy, one that took the food and the organiser.

I can understand not wanting to feel different but the fact is in respect of food this person has different needs. Maybe they could all have gone shopping so this child could say is or not suitable or agree what they would bring separately. They can also agree what flavour crisps they prefer etc. not just allergies.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2024 16:21

DS and DH have gone to Asda to hunt. Thank you for the various pointers.

And yes, DS should be working this out for himself, and as part of that he asked for help. He hasn't actually gone shopping by himself as Asda is 10 miles away, there is no bus, and he's not old enough to drive.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I hope this is a skills test for DS or a dislike rather than an allergy.

Whilst you are taking it very seriously, I doubt others would.

My children dont have allergies that we are aware of.

But friends children do and I work in a nursery and there is NO way we would pass this to a child or parent without more information.
