Supermarket pasta sauce with no onions ???!!!!!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2024 10:28

DS is going on his DoE bronze practice expedition on Monday.
The kids have divied up who is bringing what.

DS has been allocated pasta sauce.
School want shop-brought stuff, I guess for hygiene and allergies etc.

The other stipulation is that it can't contain onions, as one of the lads in the group is allergic to them. Also no nuts - so no pesto.

Please can anyone tell me if any jarred pasta sauce that does not contain onions?!!! I'm struggling here - had a look in co-op last night, and nothing.

We have no other supermarkets locally, but can drive to Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and M&S.

Help!

Yes the little jars of Sacla are good and the sundried tomato one at least is onion free.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 16/03/2024 11:02

In that case Aldi do little jars of tomato and mascarpone stir in sauce that would be good.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 16/03/2024 11:04

Just take passata and mixed herbs.

I’m surprised the teacher is taking the risk of allowing someone to bring a sauce for someone with an allergy.

Well it's just as well I'm taking it seriously then.

Ours did too.

the no nuts was a pain for the morning as they’d decided to take chocolate crepes and pastry’s.

Lidl have pasta sauces in plastic pots. One is with onion, garlic, carrots etc, the other is plain tomatoes.

LetMeGoogleThat · 16/03/2024 11:36

As a mum who's son has a serious allergy, if you are transferring into other containers....take a pic of the ingredients list etc from the original packaging. It will help the lad with Allergies feel relaxed.

It is. Some parents don’t get involved, which is why I’m surprised the teacher is taking the risk of potentially trusting a teenager to get it right.

When my DD done hers she had to take her own food and was under strict instructions that there was to be no food sharing by her or with her. Thats the only way they’d agree to her doing it with them as they couldn’t risk her having a reaction in the middle of nowhere.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 16/03/2024 11:58

Just get a jar of passata and a jar of sun-dried tomatoes.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 16/03/2024 11:59

He could take a tin of chopped tomatoes to have with the pasta. Not very exciting but better than nothing.

Pesto usually contains pine nuts which aren't actually nuts, although the name would make you think otherwise. Would be worth asking your son to check with the other lad because it might be that pesto is actually fine and it solves your problem :)

Came on to say this.
I have a nut allergy and can eat pesto no problem!

ProjectKettle · 16/03/2024 12:10

There are some asda own brand pasta sauces that have no onions as i buy these. I think one of them is technically a meatball tomato sauce one but works perfectly nicely as a pasta sauce.

fruitpastille · 16/03/2024 12:12

What about a tub of garlic and herb Philadelphia?

Lots of jarred pesto sauces contain cashew nuts instead of pine nuts which is probably why the school says not to use them

Garlic is in the onion family, so I'd have thought it would be a no-no.

MargotMoon · 16/03/2024 12:23

I don't eat onions - Lidl has a tomato & basil pasta sauce in the fresh section which is onion-free.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/03/2024 12:30

Look in health food shops or Amazon for Low FodMap pasta sauces- you can’t have onion on a low fodmap diet so they won’t contain it

Tesco Free From green pesto doesn't contain onions. Tiny jar goes a long way, and will be light to carry. It's really good!

Unfortunately it’s full of cashews.

If garlic is ok Loyd Grossman tomato and basil sauce looks fine to me if you want a tomatoey one (ingredients list below in case I’ve missed something obvious). It’s available in my Tesco. I’m sure lots of cheesy/creamy/carbonara sauces would be suitable but probably not as nice to eat.

Tomatoes (60%)
Tomato Purée
Garlic Purée
Basil (2.5%)
Rapeseed Oil
Sugar
Sea Salt
Concentrated Lemon Juice
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Dried Basil
Ground Black Pepper

Most jarred presto is made with cheaper cashew nuts or almonds, so no!

DoggieMommie · 16/03/2024 12:36

A lot of people who have sensitivity to onions also have sensitivity to garlic. You need to clarify with the boy.

Floofydawg · 16/03/2024 12:36

BertieBotts · 16/03/2024 10:32

Just a plain passata or tinned chopped tomatoes suffices as a pasta sauce, especially the ones with stuff like basil or garlic in.

That would taste like shite.

Allergy lad should take his own food.

DoggieMommie · 16/03/2024 12:39

What about a tube of sundried tomato paste? Lighter and safer than a glass jar too, nicer than plain canned tomato. Do check ingredients list though.

Danikm151 · 16/03/2024 12:41

Asda’s just essentials bolognese sauce. Just looked in the cupboard and turns out there’s no onion in it 🙂

only about 60p too.

I'm glad you pointed this out. No onions = no garlic. And no onion powder, no garlic powder.

Which unhelpfully, seem to be in every sauce, ketchup and relish in supermarkets.

OP, I'd stick with the tetra-pack of plain passata. It's one meal. It'll do.

Elphamouche · 16/03/2024 14:06

Dolmio creamy tomato and Carbonara packets don’t have onions in. I cannot stand onions!

the jars might but the packets definitely don’t.
