Newark market. Worth a visit?

My DD lives in Nottingham and I am going to visit her next week.
I saw a programme on the TV (newark newark) which had the market on.
Is it worth the effort? Our weekly market has 4 stalls so I would be quite giddy with excitement to go...

OP means Newark in Nottingham, the clue is in the post 😂

I like it although I haven't been for a while admittedly. Newark itself is a bit of a dying town.

I haven’t been for a while but I would so no. Much better to get on the train to Lincoln to have a wander round.

Thanks for the replies. Newark in Nottingham.
I am decided, it's definitely happening next Saturday.
I live near to Kings Lynn so at the end of the train line and, pretty much the end of civilisation!

My mate lives in Newark and is raging about that programme, she doesn’t live on the estate featured. It’s ok for a day trip go and look at the ruined castle walls as well it’s where the registry office is.

Dahliasrule · 16/03/2024 12:26

Live about 12 miles away but haven’t been for years. (More Lincoln focused). However, friends from London that we took there ( come up regularly so had run out of places to visit), loved the town. Market used to be good but as I say haven’t been for ages. If you are interested in history, the civil war museum is good.

To be fair, I'm not surprised. It was shockingly bad

Little on in the market tbh although there is also a craft market every few weeks inside the town hall buildings which has some nice stalls. Have a wander round the castle runs / church if open (it's lovely) and civil war museum if that interests you.

I mean yeah if you need some fruit and veg and a few dog treats maybe a cardy Newark is ideal.

Mercurial123 · 16/03/2024 16:04

Newark is worth the visit as the town centre is pretty and has some interesting old buildings. They have an excellent Thai restaurant, but I wouldn't go just for the market.

Mydogisagentleman · 16/03/2024 16:58

You can never have too many cardy's. I'm taking my dog to stay with he and SIL for 8 weeks and they are vegan. So it's a win for everyone!

No, as a PP suggested get the train to Lincoln instead.

Not it's really not!

I am an incomer to Newark and live outside the town. The TV program Newark Newark was appalling and not representative of the town at all.

The market is ok - much like any small town market I guess. I wouldn’t come especially for that, however, there are some nice little shops in the town, particularly independent ladieswear shops: Jane Young on Chain Lane, Shirt Sleeves on Middlegate, and another on Middlegate but I forget it’s name, also a nice shoe shop on the corner of Mgate and Chain Ln, and another, Hobsons, in Chain Ln.
Lovely coffee shop, Strays, in the Ossington which is opposite the castle on Bargate.
There is a Tambo Lounge on Middlegate in the old Buttermarket.
Then of course there is the castle itself and it’s gardens.
I quite like Newark

I don't know much about Newark, sorry. Lincoln is very picturesque. Also, not sure on your transport but Southwell Workhouse is worth a visit if you like history. Hope you have a lovely time.

2andadog · 25/03/2024 15:58

Newark has a lot going on these days, and a lot of people moving from elsewhere in the country so it's definitely not dying! Did you have a nice time OP?
